About Bien Seramik Design Team

He was born in Istanbul on May 19, 1973, Tolga Berkay graduated from Marmara University Fine Arts Ceramic Department where he studied from 1992 to 1996, ranking second, and engaged in sculpture work at Prof. Dr. Tankut Öktem’s studio. In later years, he worked for twelve years at Istanbul. Eczacıbaşı Vitra Seramik Factory, Design and CAD/CAM department and for a short time, at Kohler Factories in France. He was trained on high pressure mould design and production in Italy on which he made applications in Turkey. Setting up his own studio in Şile, Istanbul in 1997, Tolga Berkay created works on Hittite civilization and wall reliefs, and showed his applications in various architectural structures, staying loyal to the originals of Hittite Reliefs in local and international museums. He has been serving as design director at Bien Seramik sanitary ware and Tiles plants in Bozüyük since 2011. The artist, who has worked with ceramics for a time period over seventeen years, who has designs in various solo exhibitions and institutional firms, has won various prizes on sculpture, ceramic and bathroom designs in Turkey and international platforms.

Interview with Bien Seramik Design Team

Bien Seramik Design Team ("BSDT") interviewed on Tuesday, 20 March.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

BSDT : My industry is based on past 22 years. I started work life in Eczacibasi / Vitra. I am currently working as a Design Director at Bien Seramik. I have won 12 International Design Awards until this day.

How did you become a designer?

BSDT : I've always been interested in Fine Arts since I was a kid. In high school I decided to be a designer. Later I entered and won the examination of the Faculty of Fine Arts. I am originally an industrial ceramic designer.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

BSDT : When designing, I begin by sketching first. After completing my sketches, my computer designs are my models. I render my modeled finished designs ready for rendering afterwards. I get inspiration from nature in all my projects.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

BSDT : First of all, I love to design. When I get inspiration for design, I feel a high energy in my hands. I like to discover something new most when designing. If you think you are the first to see him and witness the birth.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

BSDT : As a designer, the first person I was impressed with was a famous sculptor. He is my teacher, Prof. Dr. Tankut Öktem.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

BSDT : In my future plans, there are intelligent bathrooms that are friendly to nature.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

BSDT : They need to work hard. Where possible, design competitions must be involved.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

BSDT : My suggestions, architects and designers are designing everything from nature to observing and preserving natural resources in the best possible way. Besides that they have plenty of work to do.

What is your day to day look like?

BSDT : As a designer, I make a lot of sketches every day. Sketching makes me feel better. I do painting between my other works.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

BSDT : I review the latest designs. Trend colors are always of my interest. I visit fairs and exhibitions to follow all these trends.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

BSDT : First of all, look for ergonomics. A good design should be friendly to the environment and the user.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

BSDT : In order for good design to be available, manufacturability must also be designed. The design which is suffering from the production is not a good design.

What is your biggest design work?

BSDT : My biggest design work is Lotus for bathroom design. I was inspired by the lotus flower when designing this design. All parts of the progeny were made in the same form and production was transferred.

Who is your favourite designer?

BSDT : Karim Rashid and Philip Starck.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

BSDT : I am born in Istanbul. Istanbul has always inspired me. My style has embraced western cultures. Besides that, I am fed from Anatolian culture mosaic.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

BSDT : I work as a design manager at the head of Bien ceramic design team. Me and my design team are always very busy and flexible time.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

BSDT : As a designer, I believe that we have preserved the natural water resources of the planet we live in as our greatest contributor. I provide water saving functions in my designs.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

BSDT : I won the international designer title. This has made me known worldwide. I encourage every designer to participate in such design competitions.
