Interview with JP SPACE Studio

JP SPACE Studio ("JSS") interviewed on Saturday, 21 May.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

JSS : I was fascinated by drawings since I was a child and majored in art at junior high and senior high school. However, I gradually found out that such set art form wasn’t my passion. I began to learn illustrations and majored in visual communication design in university then fell in love the process of making stories alive.

How did you become a designer?

JSS : I enjoyed using drawing to express my feelings since I was a child, and found out that others would be moved by this. In this way, I, who am not good at words, can tell the story through the picture. Then it slowly developed into motion graphics.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

JSS : To accurately deliver what the customer wants to deliver. It can’t be called as a design if it’s not well-delivered. Of course, also an accurate schedule planning.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

JSS : The moment when I picture how it would be realized, I would be very excited, as always.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

JSS : I live in Taiwan, and my hometown is Taitung. The historical environment has made us perseverant and indomitable. Through complete democratic freedom, we can say whatever we want and show our own story. This is the greatest thing in Taiwan. L’Étranger by Albert Camus, which teaches me about there are also many gray areas.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

JSS : Make a long animated movie which conveys a story that I want has always been my dream. I will continue to improve my storytelling ability and try to use different kinds of media in the future. For now, what I want to try the most is the combination of film with VFX or motion graphics, and having the opportunity to create amazing results once again.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

JSS : Have your own daily routine, have a regular life but keep extra time for sudden changes. Feel and observe every moment of life, and make analyzing a habit. Don’t start your work from first coming up visual appearances but change the story into words when work with clients.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

JSS : Happy comes the first. I would always ask myself “Am I happy?” and “Are the team members happy?”.

What is your day to day look like?

JSS : I’m a person who values daily routine. A simple breakfast with a cup of coffee starts my day in the morning. Then I think about the script, upcoming project and have meetings with my team. After work, I feed and talk with my cat, have a nice dinner with my partner and relax till I sleep.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

JSS : If the design sets much earlier than the trend, it will not be accepted by the public. And it won’t be able to deliver stories as it should. On the other hand, if the trend sets the design, it would make the design cliche. There are no set rules but it’s about what can be accepted and conveys the right message to the public.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

JSS : Meet the clients’ need accurately with precise communication, schedule and the cooperation of the whole team. I think it’s the ability of telling a good story, and the ability of making stories alive.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

JSS : When admiring from the heart, but only in the present moment.

What is your biggest design work?

JSS : I would say it’s “Chick Coin”. We had a great time working together and tried to come up with different funny ideas during the project. For we must built a whole new but funny, interesting worldview, we put a lot of efforts on designing story board, style frames, concepts, motion design and BGM.

Who is your favourite designer?

JSS : If there needs to be an answer, I would say animated movie. Like Kon Satoshi or Miyazaki Hayao, I am deeply moved by how they tell a story. They have given me a lot of inspirations and thoughts, no matter it’s narrative of dreams, virtual or for my creativity. I would love to meet Miyazaki Hayao in person. I am still fascinated by his works now. I want to learn about his life experience, production process and state of mind while making those famous movies.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

JSS : Silver, Japan, boba milk tea, fall, to create something and JP SPACE Studio.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

JSS : JP SPACE Studio was founded in 2017. We dedicated to bring experts in different fields to join our fleet and prosperity of Taiwan image circles. We also teach at colleges and universities, cooperating with young designers in the industry, sharing and supporting, and create a better and more diverse environment.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

JSS : Bringing kindness, positive vibe and reflection to the world. I hope that I could use such a medium make the world a little bit kinder.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

JSS : I’m really thankful to be given all these awards. They’re precious to me and my team, and we believe it’s just a beginning.
