Interview with Hsiang Kai Yang

Hsiang Kai Yang ("HKY") interviewed on Saturday, 1 May.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

HKY : I have been engaged in interior design for more than 12 years,The fields of study during the school period include graphic design, landscape design, urban design and space design, and specialize in urban planning during the research period.

How did you become a designer?

HKY : I like to appreciate beautiful things, and I also like to work on creating beautiful things, especially when creating beautiful things, I also meet the needs of all kinds of people. It makes me feel very fulfilled, so I don’t hesitate to choose Be a designer who can bring happiness to people

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

HKY : Observing the natural environment, and then thinking with hands instead of the brain. Thinking while drawing by hand is my usual way. After the overall structure is determined, I start to draw with professional software.For example, AutoCad 3Dmax

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

HKY : At the beginning of the design, the hand-drawn concept sketch is the most exciting time. It is a bit boring when I start to draw the drawings needed for the construction in the middle, but when I see the satisfied expression of the customer after the construction is completed, I know this is what he wants. This always fills me with happy energy

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

HKY : When I was studying, I always admired designers or architects with beautiful hand-painted, especially Louis Kahn’s view of light, Wright’s design hand-painting beyond contemporary thinking, and Carlo Scarpa’s detailed hand-painted drawings, which are all for me. It has a great influence. So I think that as a designer, the hand-painting ability is essential.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

HKY : See more, listen more, learn more, practice using the five senses to experience the environment and space, and try different cultural experiences. These will become the nourishment of a designer's creation.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

HKY : Communicate more, don’t be alone

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

HKY : The Internet is already an important medium for acquiring modern trends. There are many new things or new materials that can be used, which is very interesting. However, there is too much information and it is easy to get lost in it. We must be able to calm down. Listen to your heart and establish your own values and beliefs. Trends are short-lived. A competent designer can create trends instead of following them.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

HKY : How to know that a good design needs to be experienced.A good design naturally appears around you and provides its functions when you need it. Often people confuse design and art. Design is to solve problems, and art is personal creation. A good designer must have the ability to listen to needs, rather than making something that no one needs.

Who is your favourite designer?

HKY : Carlo Scarpa’s detailed design is admirable, and the craftsmanship design makes people yearn. If I can talk to the master, I hope I can talk to Carlo Scarpa and Wright about their belief in creation? I think the impact of our understanding of good design is a comprehensive one. It is the accumulation of time that contributes to our views on good design. There is no doubt that Carlo Scarpa’s design is still stunning

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

HKY : We often think about the nature of things when designing. It should not be too difficult to work with me, but the partners I work with must have a positive attitude and passion for design, and the most challenging aspect of this profession is passion. How Maintaining the enthusiasm in your heart is very important. A good designer can constantly reflect on himself, improve his abilities and tap the endless enthusiasm in his heart

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

HKY : When I am able to provide some subsidies to some disadvantaged groups and provide practical experience to help students integrate with society

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

HKY : In the course of this competition, we discovered our shortcomings. Many outstanding works are really admirable. This is a good competitive relationship. From the competition, we are also learning different viewpoints and skills, which is of great help to the improvement of our ability. The design competition is a good opportunity to examine oneself and see that many colleagues are working hard to make the world a better place, so that you will not feel alone.
