Interview with HUI QIONG YANG

HUI QIONG YANG ("HQY") interviewed on Tuesday, 17 May.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

HQY : I have worked for about ten years and was the chief illustrator of Guge Dynasty Design Co., Ltd

How did you become a designer?

HQY : Probably when I was in college, the popularity of Muji and apple broke the concept of traditional brands. At that time, yuanyanya and jobs' way of thinking influenced many people, and of course I was one of them. When I was in college, I also studied this major. At that time, I thought it was too cool to be a designer with depth and attitude, so I kept doing it in this industry. My interest in art is that when I study painting, I study the history of painting design and fall in love with it. I often think about why I design like this.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

HQY : When receiving new projects, we generally attach great importance to cultural excavation and creative innovation, as well as the feasibility of implementation. We are very concerned about the cultural excavation of the project and feel that a project should present culture as much as possible to balance the conflict between business and culture. When rendering pictures, I like to present them in C4d and like to render the details so that customers can understand our creative ideas. We are very concerned about the feasibility of landing, so we will repeatedly consider our plan, what landing difficulties we will encounter, and simulate this process as much as possible.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

HQY : At the beginning of the design, I feel very excited, because I can't imagine what the design will look like, and there may be ideas to change the whole industry, so I'm very excited. In the design process, we will feel very happy to see our ideas fall to the ground bit by bit, because we really enter this industry and make them better, so we are very satisfied. The happiness gained from design is due to the change of our ideas and results all the time, so as to feel the power and importance of design.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

HQY : I have always been particularly interested in cultural and artistic things. I think beautiful things are particularly important. I also like ideas or tools that bring progress to the industry. When I care about practicality and innovation, I am often moved by the vitality in art. Some pure primitive wild vitality fascinates me. In particular, it feels like wild art growing in the soil, which often makes me feel that the design is too deliberate and not original enough.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

HQY : Because I am also an illustrator, I still like art very much. I want to be an artist like Andy Warhol in the future. I hope to have the opportunity to bring new ideas and influence the trend of an era. This is my idea. Just try to express your ideas as well as possible.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

HQY : If you don't know about design, it's great, because I think it's very important to maintain a skeptical attitude. Why design like this? Why is this good? Is there a better plan?... The ability to doubt everything is particularly important. It is very important to find reasons and answers in doubt and find yourself in the process.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

HQY : If you want to stand out from the experts, I think the best way is not to repeat. Every time the work is completed as a challenge, try your best to break through yourself, or even innovate. Follow the footsteps of predecessors and open up a design path of your own.

What is your day to day look like?

HQY : In the morning, I like to sort out what work I still have to finish and deal with all the work. I like painting, painting my favorite Chinese classics of mountains and seas and studying Chinese traditional culture. Sometimes I go to see if my colleagues have new works that make people jealous.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

HQY : Generally, it will not follow the trend, because the trend is changing all the time. So it's important to stick to what you think is right.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

HQY : Well, the quality of design depends on the design purpose. If the purpose is achieved, it is a successful design.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

HQY : Well, when the average customer thinks this project can be completed, I am still dissatisfied and always feel sorry. I will keep a habit of taking out the previous projects regularly, and then discuss and summarize them to see if there is room for progress.

What is your biggest design work?

HQY : It is probably a Tibet project that has lasted for three years, which is of great significance. We use durable tools or products of local herdsmen in Tibet and local yak materials in Tibet to make and improve them into a commodity. We set up factories in the local area to organize local herdsmen to produce and sell them to local herdsmen and tourists. It not only solves the local employment, but also solves the local problems, because from the establishment of the project to the discussion of the project, and then the implementation of the project, it is like seeing a seed germinate in this land and grow into a towering tree, which is very meaningful.

Who is your favourite designer?

HQY : My favorite designer is Tadao Ando, who uses the most basic materials to make some of the simplest and most direct expressions.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

HQY : I'm from Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Because I'm Chinese, my way of thinking and expression are very Chinese. This is a gene in my bones and can't be changed. I know some foreign designers. After reading their works, I found that I am so Chinese. Because I am engaged in the design industry, I look at all walks of life from the perspective of design, and I will have a lot of different understanding.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

HQY : It's easy for me to work with my little studio partner. Just solve the problem, but this is too difficult for many people. Most people are just to prove that they are doing things, not to solve problems. I like to work with challenging people. We can surpass ourselves and make good achievements together.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

HQY : I often organize small partners of the studio to participate in many international public welfare poster activities, which can not only exercise our creative ability, but also make a modest contribution to the public welfare.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

HQY : The design competition will give us honor and achievement, and it is also a recognition of our design ability. It also shows us that so many predecessors have been working hard to make better works, and also encourages us to move forward and the benign development of the industry.
