MARINA KHALIL ("MK") interviewed on Wednesday, 22 May.
MK : I have been in the design industry since 2007, giving me over 17 years of experience. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with several prominent companies and esteemed clients. My educational background includes a degree in business of design in BMI and Project management in London business school and finance, which laid the foundation for my professional journey.
MK : I've always been passionate about design, drawn to drawing and creating from a young age. My father, an interior designer, greatly influenced me with his passion for transforming spaces. Although we took different paths in design, I was determined to create my own identity.A pivotal moment for me was when a child compared me to a fairy who could transform ugly spaces into something wonderful. This reinforced my belief in my abilities and fueled my drive to excel in design. My journey has been driven by a deep passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces and a desire to make a positive impact through design.
MK : When designing, my top three priorities are functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. Functionality: Ensuring that the space or product meets the practical needs of its users is paramount. I focus on creating designs that are intuitive, efficient, and enhance the user experience. Aesthetics: I strive to create visually appealing designs that evoke emotions and tell a story. Each project incorporates a central theme that aligns with the client's vision while maintaining a unique and cohesive style. Sustainability: I prioritize sustainable practices, using eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient solutions to minimize environmental impact. In terms of technique, I rely on a blend of traditional and digital tools. I start with hand sketches to brainstorm and conceptualize ideas, then transition to computer-aided design (CAD) software for detailed plans and renderings. Physical models and mock-ups are also integral to my process, allowing me to explore and refine designs in a tangible way. Approaching a new project involves thorough research and understanding of the client's needs and the project's context. I engage in collaborative discussions to gather insights and ensure that the final design aligns with the client's vision and goals.
MK : Designing fulfills me by allowing me to express my creativity, solve complex challenges, and create spaces or products that enhance people's lives. It provides a deep sense of happiness and accomplishment, knowing that my work can inspire and positively influence others. The pleasure I derive from designing comes from this combination of creative expression, technical execution, and the tangible impact of the finished product.
MK : Several non-design skills have been crucial: Communication: Ensures clear client and team collaboration. Problem-Solving: Helps overcome design challenges. Project Management: Keeps projects on time and within budget. Cultural Sensitivity: Enriches designs with diverse perspectives. Empathy: Focuses on user-centric and functional designs. My father, an interior designer, greatly influenced my passion for design.
MK : My growth path focuses on continuous learning and expanding my expertise, particularly in sustainable design and new technologies. I dream of designing a large-scale cultural center that blends modern architecture with historical elements, emphasizing sustainability and community engagement. I plan to design eco-friendly residential communities, smart urban spaces, and impactful public art installations. I aspire to be remembered as a designer who created innovative, sustainable, and impactful spaces.
MK : My advice to young designers is to embrace failure as a learning opportunity, continuously learn and expand their knowledge, build a strong network, seek feedback, stay persistent, and find their unique design voice. The best advice I received was to stay true to myself and my vision. I grow my knowledge by actively seeking learning opportunities through education, workshops, and networking with peers.
MK : Stay Authentic: Maintain your unique style and vision. Continuous Learning: Keep updated on industry trends and best practices. Collaborate: Work with other creatives for new perspectives. Seek Feedback: Embrace constructive criticism to grow. Manage Time Effectively: Prioritize tasks and avoid overcommitting. Embrace Failure: Learn from setbacks as part of growth. Focus on Impact: Design with purpose and intentionality. Stay Inspired: Surround yourself with sources of creativity. Adapt to Change: Be open to new ideas and technologies. Stay Humble and Grateful: Recognize the importance of collaboration and share your knowledge generously.
MK : A day in my life as a designer is always dynamic and filled with new experiences. I start my day by taking my child to nursery, which sets a positive tone for the morning. After a refreshing meditation session, I head to the office, where no two days are ever the same. From brainstorming sessions with my team to client meetings and design work, each day brings new opportunities and challenges. Whether I'm crafting design concepts, meeting with clients, or exploring the city for inspiration, I love the variety and excitement that comes with being a designer. It's this ever-changing nature of my work that keeps me motivated and engaged every single day.
MK : I believe in finding a balance between staying informed about current design trends and maintaining my own personal design style. While I do keep an eye on the latest trends through industry publications, design blogs, and attending design events, I prioritize developing a timeless aesthetic that reflects my unique vision and values. I'm more inclined towards creating designs that have longevity and resonate with users beyond fleeting trends. However, if a particular trend aligns with my design philosophy and enhances the project's concept, I'm open to integrating it thoughtfully. My inspiration comes from a variety of sources, including nature, art, architecture, and cultural influences. Ultimately, I strive to create designs that are not only visually appealing but also functional, sustainable, and meaningful.
MK : For me, good design is defined by its ability to seamlessly blend form and function, enhancing the user experience while also considering aesthetic appeal and practicality. When evaluating products or projects, I look for several key aspects that indicate a well-designed outcome. Firstly, functionality: does the design effectively fulfill its intended purpose? Secondly, aesthetics: is the design visually appealing and cohesive? Thirdly, innovation: does the design offer a fresh perspective or solve a problem in a unique way? Additionally, I consider factors such as sustainability, usability, and emotional resonance with users. One particular thing that I look for in all products or projects is a sense of balance and harmony between various elements. Whether it's the proportions of a furniture piece, the layout of a space, or the choice of materials, achieving a harmonious composition is essential. Some common mistakes to avoid for making good design include neglecting user needs, prioritizing style over functionality, and failing to consider the broader context in which the design will exist. Ultimately, what makes a design good for me is its ability to inspire and delight while also serving a practical purpose. The main criteria I use to judge a design as good are its functionality, aesthetics, innovation, sustainability, usability, and emotional impact.
MK : Deciding if a design is ready is a nuanced process that involves a combination of intuition, experience, and practical considerations. While perfection may be elusive, there comes a point in the design process where I feel confident that the design meets the project brief, fulfills user needs, and aligns with my vision and objectives. For me, a design is ready when it achieves a balance between meeting functional requirements and embodying aesthetic appeal. I assess if the design effectively addresses the problem it set out to solve and if it resonates with the intended audience. While there may always be room for refinement and improvement, there comes a time when further iterations yield diminishing returns. At this stage, I make a conscious decision to finalize the design and move forward. However, I remain open to feedback and opportunities for iteration even after a design is implemented, as continuous improvement is key to staying relevant and successful in the dynamic field of design.
MK : I was working on museum. It was amazing experience
MK : Zaha Haddid
MK : My lifestyle and cultural background greatly influence my approach to design. Having lived in diverse cities like Dubai and Europe, I've been exposed to a blend of cultures, which has enriched my design perspective. I find inspiration in the vibrant energy of cities like Dubai, where diverse cultures converge to create a dynamic melting pot of creativity. Music plays a significant role in my creative process, serving as a source of inspiration and motivation. The rhythm and mood of music often influence the atmosphere I aim to create in my designs. I believe that culture deeply influences design projects, shaping our aesthetic preferences, values, and perceptions. My multicultural background allows me to draw from a rich tapestry of influences, resulting in designs that resonate with a diverse audience. In my own life, design has led to small yet positively incremental changes, such as adopting sustainable practices, embracing minimalism, and prioritizing functionality and aesthetics in my everyday surroundings. These changes have enhanced my quality of life and fostered a deeper appreciation for the impact of design on society and culture
MK : My work culture is centered around collaboration, innovation, and integrity. Whether working alone or with partners, I believe in fostering an environment of mutual respect, open communication, and creativity. While I value autonomy, I also recognize the importance of teamwork in achieving our goals. When selecting business partners or hiring team members, I look for individuals who share similar values, possess a strong work ethic, and demonstrate creativity, adaptability, and a passion for design. Trust and reliability are essential traits that I prioritize in any professional relationship. In terms of corporate culture, a commitment to excellence, continuous learning, and social responsibility are fundamental aspects that cannot be overlooked. Upholding ethical standards and promoting diversity and inclusivity are also integral to our work ethos. The core challenges of my profession include balancing creativity with practicality, navigating tight deadlines and budgets, and staying abreast of evolving trends and technologies. As a designer, my responsibilities include conceptualizing, designing, and overseeing the implementation of projects, while also liaising with clients, suppliers, and other stakeholders to ensure successful outcomes. In terms of characteristics and personal traits, a good designer, artist, or architect should possess a blend of creativity, technical proficiency, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities. Adaptability, resilience, and a willingness to learn and evolve are also crucial traits for success in this dynamic field.
MK : As a designer, I believe in the power of design to make a positive impact on society, and I actively seek opportunities to give back to the community. One way I contribute is by participating in pro bono design projects for non-profit organizations or community initiatives. These projects allow me to use my skills to benefit those in need and create meaningful spaces that enhance quality of life. I also support young designers by mentoring and providing opportunities for growth and development. This includes participating in design events, conferences, and workshops where I share insights and knowledge with aspiring designers. Additionally, I collaborate with local organizations and schools to promote design education and awareness. Moreover, I strive to incorporate principles of sustainability and social responsibility into my design practice, advocating for environmentally-friendly and inclusive design solutions. By creating spaces that prioritize people and planet, I aim to contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
MK : Attending the A’ Design Award was an enriching experience that provided valuable opportunities for networking, learning, and recognition. One of the main benefits of participating in design awards like A’ Design is the exposure and visibility it offers, both within the design community and to potential clients and collaborators. Being recognized for my work by esteemed judges and peers boosted my confidence and credibility as a designer. Another positive experience was the chance to connect with fellow designers from around the world and exchange ideas, insights, and experiences. Collaborating with like-minded professionals and learning from their perspectives enriched my own design practice and expanded my horizons. Furthermore, receiving feedback and critique from the jury panel helped me identify areas for improvement and growth, encouraging me to push the boundaries of my creativity and innovation. Overall, participating in design awards like A’ Design has been instrumental in advancing my career, enhancing my design skills, and fostering a sense of community and camaraderie within the global design industry. As for being recognized as the Designer of the Day, it was truly an honor and a highlight of my career. It reaffirmed the value of my work and motivated me to continue striving for excellence in my design practice.
