Interview with Elizaveta Oputina

Elizaveta Oputina ("EO") interviewed on Sunday, 29 December.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

EO : I have been in the design and architecture industry for 9 years since I started my university studies in architecture. During this time, I have worked as an architect in a bureau, engaged in interior design for private properties, and now I mainly focus on the visual aspect of projects: creating visualizations and interior concepts. I enjoy immersing myself in the profession from different angles and discovering new things. I'm very happy that the field of design and architecture offers opportunities for growth and allows me to view things from different perspectives and try new things.

How did you become a designer?

EO : From a young age, creativity was my preferred pursuit over social interactions, and I always aspired to be an artist or designer. When it came time to choose a profession, I selected architecture, as it seemed both vast and fascinating. After graduating from university, I transitioned to interior design, finding it a better fit for me. I enjoy the numerous ways it allows for self-expression and making impactful statements. Currently, I'm deeply immersed in exploring AI and its integration into the fields of design and architecture.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

EO : Now I'm very interested in the field of AI and how we can reduce design time thanks to new technologies. I believe it's an excellent tool in the hands of a designer, allowing simplification of many project processes.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

EO : I feel a mix of creativity, satisfaction, and sometimes challenge when designing.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

EO : I believe my environment has shaped me as a designer to a great extent—my visual experience, the cities I've lived in, and the nature that surrounds me.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

EO : As I am currently passionate about AI, in the future, I want to involve more people in this field. I want to show how architects and designers can use this tool, promote it to the masses, and demonstrate through my own example how we can integrate this tool into the workflow.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

EO : I would advise studying AI because it will help them create concepts and visual images much faster than traditional techniques. In my opinion, AI is the future, and it should be integrated into work as soon as possible. It is an excellent tool in the hands of a creator who has thoughts and ideas.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

EO : I suggest fellow designers, artists, and architects continuously explore new tools and technologies like AI to enhance their creativity and efficiency. Embrace diverse experiences and environments to enrich your design perspective and stay passionate about your work. Keep learning and evolving, as the field of design is ever-changing.

What is your day to day look like?

EO : My day-to-day routine varies depending on the projects I'm working on, but it generally follows a structured yet flexible schedule to balance creativity and productivity.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

EO : I keep up with the latest design trends by regularly reading design publications, attending industry events, and engaging with the design community online. Trends matter to the extent that they reflect current preferences and innovations, but it's essential to balance them with timeless design principles and the unique needs of each project.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

EO : Design is the fusion of the author's ideas and concepts, shaped by their experience and vision, along with external factors like client requirements or usability. Good design effectively balances aesthetics and functionality, achieving harmony.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

EO : I decide if my design is ready by ensuring it meets the project’s goals, aligns with the client’s vision, and resolves any functional and aesthetic challenges. Additionally, I seek feedback from peers and clients to confirm that the design is both practical and visually appealing. When all these elements are in harmony, I consider the design complete.

What is your biggest design work?

EO : One of my proudest projects is my concept design for a luxury hotel in Moscow that seamlessly combines traditional Russian culture with modern luxury. This project, located in the heart of the city, was particularly meaningful as it allowed me to explore my heritage and translate it into a contemporary design language. The initial aspiration for this work was to create a space that not only provides comfort and sophistication but also serves as an ode to the richness of Russian traditions. I incorporated classic motifs, materials like marble and wood, and a modern architectural style to bridge the past and present. The design features carefully curated spaces, such as a grand lobby inspired by Russian craftsmanship, juxtaposed with minimalist guest rooms that reflect modern sensibilities. This project stands out as my best work because it encapsulates my ability to merge cultural storytelling with functional design. It presented several challenges, such as balancing the ornate aspects of traditional Russian art with the clean lines of modern design, as well as ensuring the concept aligned with client expectations. Currently, I’m working on AI-driven design processes, creating innovative visualizations for interior spaces and architectural concepts. These projects excite me because they push the boundaries of what’s possible in design, integrating technology to enhance creativity and efficiency.

Who is your favourite designer?

EO : I get inspired by design masters like Alvar Aalto, Tadao Ando, Bjarke Ingels, and Jean Nouvel as architects. From designers, Gary Nuriev inspires me with his innovative and original approach to design.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

EO : I strongly believe that my culture and life experiences influence my design projects. For instance, growing up surrounded by diverse architecture has instilled in me a sense of respect for harmony and functionality. Currently, I’m based in Austin, Texas, working on projects that integrate artificial intelligence into design workflows, as well as exploring new ways to create more sustainable and meaningful spaces. Good design is essential for the advancement of society because it shapes how we live, work, and connect with one another. On a personal level, design has taught me the value of intentionality and minimalism. For example, I’ve introduced small but impactful changes to my daily life, such as optimizing my workspace for focus and incorporating thoughtful lighting to improve well-being. For me, design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a way of enhancing life and fostering progress in both individual and collective ways.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

EO : My work culture is rooted in collaboration, innovation, and attention to detail. I believe in fostering a creative and supportive environment where ideas can flourish. My business philosophy centers on understanding the client's needs, delivering high-quality work, and continuously exploring new technologies and methodologies to push the boundaries of design. This approach ensures that every project is unique, functional, and aesthetically pleasing, ultimately exceeding client expectations. I strive to make working with me as seamless and enjoyable as possible. While I often work independently, I do collaborate with partners when the project calls for it. When selecting business partners, I look for creativity, reliability, and a shared passion for design. I value clear communication and a mutual commitment to excellence.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

EO : As a designer, artist, and architect, I strive to contribute to society by focusing on creating meaningful and impactful work that addresses education, sustainability, and inclusivity. I frequently share my expertise through webinars, workshops, and articles, promoting the integration of innovative technologies like artificial intelligence in design. This effort helps build a stronger, more informed design community and inspires others to explore creative possibilities. Sustainability is at the heart of my projects, as I aim to design spaces that respect the environment by using natural, eco-friendly materials and creating harmony between architecture and nature. Additionally, I prioritize accessibility and inclusivity by crafting designs that are functional and welcoming to diverse groups, ensuring spaces meet a variety of user needs. My ultimate goal is to leverage design as a tool for positive change—enhancing individual lives, strengthening communities, and addressing global challenges like environmental conservation and universal accessibility. Through these endeavors, I hope to make a lasting, beneficial impact on society.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

EO : Attending the A’ Design Award was an incredibly enriching experience for me. It provided an excellent platform to showcase my work on an international stage, connecting me with a global audience of designers, architects, and creative professionals. The recognition boosted my confidence and opened up opportunities for collaborations with like-minded individuals and companies.
