Kaj Ransvi ("KR") interviewed on Friday, 3 January.
KR : I'm born in Sweden in 1968, originating from both Sweden and Finland. For the moment I'm living in south of Sweden, in the past I have been living in the Caribbean for nearly 10 years. I have been in the design industry for 30 years now working in different fields. I have always loved details and shapes in products, buildings, arts and in the nature. I don't think I made a choice to become a product designer, it just became a part of who I am. For the last 30 years I have been designing unique and luxurious properties, private villas, hotels and restaurants worldwide. Product design have always been a big part of my work, for example when you are designing the interiors and furnitures I'm normally drawing the furnitures and get them produced so they match my ideas, if there is a need for better looking light switches I design them as well, I remember at one time we was working with a lighting product that in my opinion did't really work, so I made a product that worked really well and also got rewarded in several design awards, RED DOT design award, Interior Inovation award, German design award, so for me I love having an existing product and redesign it to a better product.
KR : From a young age, I was fascinated by technical drawings and the distinctive shapes found in products and architecture. Although I didn’t pursue formal education in design, my passion and insatiable curiosity have driven me to explore and learn. This self-taught journey has shaped my perspective and approach to design, with each experience adding to my growth as a designer.
KR : Many people describe my design as bold and sophisticated, maybe confusing but at same time not, it can be burlesk in design but perfection in details, the perfect combination, for example I made the design of a sneaker, called The Sneaker, its raw in black snake printed skin and glossy gold details, perfect for the skater as well at the reception for the Nobel Price!
KR : For me the best design is when every detail is perfect both in size, color, texture and proportions. For me, great design evokes a sense of harmony, where every detail—size, color, texture, and proportion—is perfect. Seeing good design relaxes me, while poorly proportioned elements can make me uneasy. I admit, I’m that person who adjusts objects to their ideal position, driven by a passion for balance and aesthetics. It’s my way of finding calm in design.
KR : From a young age, I was fascinated by technical drawings and intrigued by unique shapes in products and architecture. Though I have no formal design education, my passion and relentless curiosity for exploring and understanding products have been instrumental in shaping my skills and perspective as a designer. This self-driven journey has defined my approach to the craft.
KR : My growth as a designer spans diverse fields, including lighting, cars, jewelry, tattoo machines, watches, fashion, furniture, architecture, and technical communication. Looking ahead, my dream project is to design a unique collection of sunglasses, blending functionality with bold, innovative aesthetics to create something truly distinctive.
KR : My advice to new designers is to always observe and absorb the details around you—turn your surroundings into an ever-growing creative library. Embrace mistakes as valuable lessons, and never say something isn’t possible. Persistence and curiosity are key to growth and innovation in design.
KR : Success as a designer comes from believing in your ideas while staying flexible. Don’t let others say it’s impossible—trust your vision. Sometimes, stepping away helps. Write down your ideas, revisit them later, and decide whether to refine or release them. This balance of persistence and adaptability fosters creativity and growth.
KR : To do my best work, I need to ease into my flow with a slow morning—breakfast and good music set the tone. On tough days, I step away to recharge, as inspiration can't be forced. Taking a break and returning with the right mindset ensures my designs are authentic and thoughtful.
KR : I stay informed through various media channels showcasing global trends, but I don’t focus on fleeting trends for my designs. My inspiration comes from nature, architecture, and daily life, which deeply influence my work. I believe timeless design is more meaningful than following short-lived trends.
KR : Good design, to me, is when every detail—size, color, texture, and proportion—aligns perfectly. It evokes a sense of calm because the brain naturally recognizes harmony. When something feels off, like poor proportions, it creates discomfort. I’m the type of person who adjusts things to ensure they’re in the right position for balance and aesthetic appeal.
KR : Deciding when a design is ready is often a matter of instinct—there’s a moment when it just feels complete, and I know it's time to stop. Sometimes, though, pushing further leads to overworking it. In those cases, stepping away and revisiting the design later helps me realize when it’s truly finished.
KR : I remember at one time a long time ago I was working with a lighting product that in my opinion did't really work, so I made a product called ”The Multilist” that worked really well, solved a lot of problems in the industry and also got rewarded in several design awards, RED DOT design award, Interior Inovation award, German design award, for me that was the door that opened for the design industry, sins then I have received 17 awards from global design award competitions.
KR : Karim Rashid was the designer who first captured my attention in the industry when I was younger. It was an unforgettable moment when we ended up competing in the same design awards, and I won. That experience was incredibly special, and it remains a highlight in my design journey.
KR : I’ve always traveled the world, finding inspiration in diverse cultures. Today, I believe that where you’re born or your background doesn’t define design. Design is global and ever-evolving, with people everywhere striving to improve the functionality of everyday products. This constant drive for innovation connects us all, regardless of origin or culture.
KR : My work culture is built on passion, continuous learning, and the belief that nothing is impossible if you’re willing to find the best solutions. I prioritize working with producers who share my commitment to quality. While I may not be the easiest person to work with due to my high standards, I believe this pushes both myself and my team to grow and deliver exceptional results. Quality and dedication drive everything I do.
KR : For many years, I’ve mentored startups in my community, helping young designers solve problems and guiding them in their creative journeys. Giving back and supporting the next generation of designers is truly inspiring to me. Moving forward, I hope to expand my impact by becoming a guest speaker at design conferences, sharing my experiences and insights with others in the field.
KR : The A' Design Award has opened countless doors for me throughout my career. It’s a fantastic way to gain recognition and connect with the design community. Personally, being named Designer of the Day is a significant milestone, proving that years of hard work and dedication have truly paid off.
