Interview with Artem Kropovinsky

Artem Kropovinsky ("AK") interviewed on Wednesday, 29 May.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

AK : I have been in the interior design industry for over a decade. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with prestigious companies and clients worldwide. I am the founder of Arsight, an interior design studio based in New York City. My work has been recognized by prominent publications such as The New York Times and Interior Design Magazine, and I have received numerous accolades, including being a winner of Muse Design Awards, French Design Awards, London Design Awards, and others. My educational background includes a degree in Interior Design, and I have continually honed my skills through international projects and collaborations.

How did you become a designer?

AK : My journey into design began in my childhood in Ukraine, where I was surrounded by a family of designers. This creative environment instilled in me a passion for design and aesthetics. I pursued formal education in Interior Design, which further solidified my career choice. My drive to become a designer was both an internal passion and influenced by my parents’ work. Over the decade, I gained extensive experience through various projects, eventually founding Arsight to bring my unique vision to life.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

AK : My top three priorities in the design process are functionality, aesthetics, and storytelling. I focus on creating spaces that are not only visually appealing but also highly functional and meaningful. My technique involves a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, including 3D visualizations and computer-aided design. I approach each project by first understanding the client’s vision and needs, then creating mood boards and sketches to visualize the final space.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

AK : Designing is an exhilarating process for me. The initial idea phase is particularly exciting, as it allows for the exploration of endless possibilities. As the design evolves, there is a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in seeing the vision come to life. The most rewarding moment is witnessing the client’s reaction to the completed project, which brings a mix of joy, pride, and accomplishment.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

AK : Growing up in a family of designers, I learned the importance of craftsmanship and attention to detail. My European roots have imbued me with a deep appreciation for history and authenticity in design. Additionally, my travels and exposure to diverse cultures have enriched my creative perspective. Non-design skills such as project management, communication, and empathy have been crucial in my success as a designer.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

AK : My growth path involves expanding Arsight’s reach and continuing to innovate in sustainable and adaptive design. In the future, I aspire to work on large-scale projects that push the boundaries of traditional design, such as creating a sustainable urban community. I want to be remembered as a designer who blends beauty, functionality, and sustainability, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

AK : For young designers, I advise staying curious and continually learning. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and don’t be afraid to take risks. Build a strong foundation of both technical and creative skills, and always stay true to your unique vision. Networking and seeking mentorship from experienced designers can also provide valuable insights and guidance.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

AK : Success in design comes from a combination of creativity, hard work, and continuous improvement. Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies, but don’t lose sight of your personal design philosophy. Collaboration and open communication are key to achieving the best results. Avoid common pitfalls like overcommitting or losing focus on the client’s needs.

What is your day to day look like?

AK : A typical day starts with a morning meditation and coffee, followed by reviewing my schedule and setting priorities for the day. I spend time on client meetings, site visits, and collaborative sessions with my team. The day involves a mix of creative work, such as sketching and designing, and administrative tasks like project management and client communications. Evenings are often reserved for personal relaxation or attending design events.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

AK : I stay updated with design trends by attending industry events, reading design publications, and engaging with the design community. While trends are important, I prioritize creating timeless designs that resonate with my clients’ visions and needs. My inspiration comes from various sources, including nature, art, history, and urban life.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

AK : A well-designed project seamlessly integrates form and function, evokes an emotional response, and meets the client’s needs. Good design is timeless, sustainable, and tells a story. I evaluate designs based on their aesthetic appeal, functionality, and the impact they have on their users.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

AK : A design is ready when it meets the project’s goals, aligns with the client’s vision, and fulfills its intended purpose. While there is always room for improvement, it’s important to recognize when the design has achieved its objectives and move on to the next project. Continuous feedback and iterations ensure that the final product is both innovative and personal.

What is your biggest design work?

AK : One of my most significant projects was a comprehensive renovation in Tribeca, NYC. This project involved creating a luxurious yet authentic space by drawing inspiration from natural elements. It was a unique challenge that required balancing aesthetics and functionality, and it received numerous awards and recognition. The success of this project solidified my reputation in the industry.

Who is your favourite designer?

AK : I greatly admire Frank Lloyd Wright for his innovative and timeless designs. His ability to harmonize architecture with nature and his commitment to functional beauty have been a significant influence on my work. If I had the chance, I would love to have a conversation with him about his design philosophy and approach.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

AK : Living in New York City, I am constantly inspired by the vibrant culture and dynamic energy of the city. Music, art, and urban life play a significant role in my creative process. My European roots also influence my design sensibility, emphasizing craftsmanship and authenticity. Good design is essential for societal advancement, and I strive to incorporate sustainable practices in both my professional and personal life.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
