Interview with Chien Yu Liu

Chien Yu Liu ("CYL") interviewed on Tuesday, 20 June.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

CYL : I started as an intern in an architect firm when I was a student, and later transferred to a company that imported original Austrian furniture as a product designer and design director of the interior design department. After accumulating various rich experiences, I founded it in 2013" SimpleUtmost Design "

How did you become a designer?

CYL : When I was young, I liked to decorate my own room, not just pasting posters and drawing graffiti, but making big moves to adjust the direction of the bed, the position of the storage cabinet, whether the desk should be against the wall or face the door, etc.. From this I found different conflicts and troubles in the process, so I discovered the wonderful feelings brought about by each change. I like this kind of challenge.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

CYL : The key points of the design are: the contrast of color matching, the coherence of line division, and the rationality of material connection. Technically, hand-painted simulations will be made on the sketches first, and then the details will be developed on the computer. As for the style, it is simple and humanistic, Modern Scandinavian design style.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

CYL : My favorite part in the design stage is the adjustment of the space structure. I like to challenge the imagination of the customer. After satisfying the customer's initial needs and imagination of the space, we will propose another more creative space plan. These Ideas often get a lot of great wow.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

CYL : It comes from the eagerness to seek goodness in the personality, the paranoia for ideas and the requirements for details.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

CYL : All the way from product design to interior design, I hope that in the future, I can plan and design a larger space or building, and dream of creating a personalized residence for each customer.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

CYL : Live well. Observe every person and thing in life. Good design comes from life.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

CYL : Do not forget the original intention, maintain enthusiasm, and have a healthy body.

What is your day to day look like?

CYL : Regularly get up early for morning running or meditation, and maintain the 16-8 fasting method to start working with a sense of hunger and a clear-headed brain. Fix work before dinner and avoid unnecessary overtime as much as possible. After dinner and holidays, leave time for your family and self-interest.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

CYL : We regularly participate in design exhibitions every year to learn about the latest design trends, and at the same time seek newer materials or products. We can continue to improve the use of new products and new design techniques while focusing on creating our own style. old deficiencies.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

CYL : Design is very subjective. Most people think that a good design may not necessarily be a good design for some people. There is no "absolutely good" design. Therefore, it is defined as a good design depends on how users feel .But for a product or project, if you can anticipate the lack or deficiencies in various aspects and improve it in advance, this is the value of being a designer.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

CYL : With the continuous change of the times and the continuous advancement of technology, everything will change, and so will people's usage habits. We can say that every completed design at the moment is a good design, but it will not be forever. OK The design will not stop at a certain moment, it will continue to refine and improve to get close to every current user.

What is your biggest design work?

CYL : The "Deep Root" project is one of our proudest works. We faced a problem of planning a 40-year-old shop building that was structurally unstable and had multiple water leaks into a three-generation house within a limited budget. For the residential space, we tried our best to keep the old structure to rebuild the space, integrated more than 30 types of work, and it took more than 3 years to complete it. In exchange for the satisfied smiles of the client's family, this is a challenging job .

Who is your favourite designer?

CYL : Steve Jobs. He promoted the design concept of aesthetics first to the world. His admiration for simple and convenient design won him many loyal followers.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

CYL : As small as living habits and as large as religious beliefs, different cultures will inevitably cause differences in design. Therefore, in design, we must be as objective as possible, open to thinking and bravely try to innovate. Only in this way can we design good products that are close to users. design.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

CYL : Among our colleagues and partners, we have a core concept of "treat the customer's home as our own home". No matter in design or practice, we must treat each other with care. This is the purpose of our company's business.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

CYL : I hope to participate in the development of the community environment and do free design for the recycling of second-hand furniture to reduce the burden on the earth's environmental pollution. At the same time, I am also willing to cultivate more young designers through speech activities or student internships.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

CYL : A big part of participating in design awards and competitions is that we can pass on our design concepts and ideas to more people, and at the same time, we can communicate with design elites from all over the world in terms of culture and design, and discover more about each other. Meta, richer perception.
