Interview with Gloguu Ltd

Gloguu Ltd ("GL") interviewed on Sunday, 22 May.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

GL : I studied in the Industrial Design Department of North China University of Technology. As an industrial designer, I have been working in the design industry for five years. Among our client groups, there are more young brands and more recognizable clients, such as NIKE, the new installation art of Beijing Daxing Airport, Midea, Lyfen etc.

How did you become a designer?

GL : From a very young age, I aspired to be a creator and hated the cookie-cutter life, so I often played with toys under my desk and drew on my textbooks during class. It wasn't until I started reading some books on design in high school that I realized that I had always wanted to be a designer, then I did it. Although the dream started very late, it was not delayed at all. All my daily useless thoughts on the trajectory of my life have been converted into my ideas that are different from others in design.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

GL : When I design, the focus is on the definition of the product. The appearance of a product is not my priority. I prefer to focus on the strategic significance behind the product and its role in the brand and society. I may use a lot of tools in my design without limitation, depending on what the design object is.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

GL : For me, design is a process of exploration. When I receive a new project, I subconsciously want to enter it. What kind of problem is this，and what is new and undiscovered? What excites me most is not only the initial idea, but also the moment when I wait for the actual product to appear. If I am excited by the above two points, my inner happiness will swell to explosion when users use the product I designed. What I get from design is the joy of experiencing different perspectives of life, which really has a lot to do with my love of adventure.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

GL : As a designer, I will first emphasize teamwork, and the latter is individual talent. When I was in college, I was the main member of the school basketball team and also the lead guitarist of the band. These experiences have helped me to see different ways of working. Both basketball and the band require teamwork. Also, I think making friends with different backgrounds has also helped me become a T-stylist.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

GL : At the beginning, you don't have to care too much about whether your work is perfect or not. Improve your aesthetics and learn to enjoy life. Design is a discipline that requires increased insight and improved multidisciplinary knowledge. Don't get stuck in your head, do more, write more, the actual progress may be more difficult and more challenging than in your mind. Don't be complacent about winning an award or a project, the best work is always in the future.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

GL : Don't get too hung up on project success, spend time doing things you love and you'll be happy deep down inside.

What is your day to day look like?

GL : My day starts at 10 am. I am a typical owl personality. I prefer to start my morning with exercise and then do a lot of reading and keep abreast of the latest design trends in society. In boring working days, I like to draw sketches and clear my thoughts. What makes me happy and excited during working days is that to have brief but enlightening exchanges with people from different professional backgrounds.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

GL : I insist on my personal design style, but as designers we still want to be sensitive to design trends.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

GL : I pay more attention to whether the design really solves the problem, whether it makes proper use of resources without causing waste; In addition, I pay more attention to the details of the design, which shows whether a designer really pays attention. God is in the details.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

GL : I was born in the central plains of China and now live in Shanghai. It is just the collision between original ecology and developed, tradition and modern, and I also get a lot of nourishment in it. China has a brilliant and diverse cultural heritage and a long history of civilization evolution, which has influenced my design, and I am very willing to show the culture and characteristics of our country to everyone through design.
