How did you become a designer?

SK : Especially talk about why you choose to become a designer, and then how did you started about being a designer; steps you take, maybe education or work experience you had? Also mention what drove you to be a designer? Was there someone that effected your decision or was it an internal drive to do good by good design? What originally made you want to be a designer? What started your interest in design? Design has always been a passion of mine, and I knew from an early age that I wanted to pursue a career in this field. The desire to make a positive impact through design, to improve people's lives and create meaningful experiences, has been a driving force for me. To begin my journey as a designer, I took steps to cultivate my skills and knowledge. I pursued formal education in fashion and textiles at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, which provided me with a solid foundation in design principles, techniques, and industry practices. This educational experience allowed me to develop a deep understanding of the creative process and the power of design in shaping the world around us. Additionally, I sought out hands-on experience in the industry, working with various fashion brands and collaborating on design projects. This practical experience allowed me to apply and refine my skills, while also gaining insights into the intricacies of the design industry. To further expand my expertise and broaden my horizons, I pursued a master's degree in Global Fashion Management. This opportunity allowed me to collaborate with renowned institutions such as FIT in New York and IFM in Paris, exposing me to diverse perspectives and global trends in design. While external influences and experiences have played a role in shaping my journey, the internal drive to do good through design has always been at the core of my passion. The desire to create designs that have a positive impact on people's lives, that enhance their experiences and bring joy, has been a constant motivator for me. Ultimately, my interest in design stems from a fascination with the intersection of creativity and functionality. I am inspired by the ability of design to solve problems, evoke emotions, and shape the world we live in. What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

SK : When designing, my top priorities revolve around creating a user-centered experience. I focus on three key aspects: user-friendliness, comfort, and aesthetics. These elements are integral to my design process and guide my approach in creating products, projects, and experiences. User-friendliness is of utmost importance to me. I strive to ensure that my designs are intuitive and easy to use, allowing individuals to interact with them effortlessly. This involves considering factors such as ergonomics, accessibility, and user interface design, all with the goal of enhancing the overall user experience. Comfort is another crucial aspect that I prioritize. I believe that a design should not only be functional but also provide a high level of comfort to the user. I carefully select materials, consider ergonomic factors, and incorporate features that promote a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Aesthetics play a significant role in my design approach as well. While functionality and usability are important, I understand that visual appeal can greatly enhance the overall user experience. I strive to create designs that are visually appealing, evoking positive emotions, and reflecting the personal style and preferences of the user. In terms of technique, I employ a combination of traditional and digital tools. I may start with hand sketches to visualize my ideas, and then utilize CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software to refine and develop the concept further. Mock-ups and physical models are also valuable tools in my process, allowing me to test and iterate on the design before moving to production. When starting a new project, I approach it with a thorough understanding of the user's needs and aspirations. I conduct research, gather insights, and collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure a holistic and informed design solution. The process often involves back-and-forth refinement and iterations until all team members are satisfied with the final outcome. Which emotions do you feel when designing?

SK : When I design a product or project, a range of emotions washes over me. The most prominent feelings are excitement, satisfaction, and a deep sense of accomplishment. The design process is an exhilarating journey that fuels my passion and creativity. The initial phase of generating ideas is particularly exciting. It's a time of exploration and boundless possibilities. This is where I let my imagination run wild and envision innovative solutions to address the needs and desires of users. The thrill of discovering a unique concept or a fresh perspective is truly invigorating. As the design progresses, the joy comes from the process itself. I find fulfillment in diving deep into research, sketching out ideas, refining prototypes, and collaborating with a team of talented individuals. Each step brings me closer to the final product or project, and I relish in the satisfaction of overcoming challenges and finding elegant solutions. When the design is finally realized and brought to life, whether it's through physical manufacturing or digital implementation, a profound sense of fulfillment washes over me. What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

SK : One aspect of my background that has shaped me as a designer is my experience collaborating with industry partners to source raw materials for our projects. This experience taught me the value of collaboration, as well as the importance of understanding and leveraging different materials and their applications. It allowed me to develop a deep knowledge of materials and their potential in design, enabling me to create innovative and sustainable solutions. In addition to design skills, I have also cultivated valuable non-design skills that have contributed to my success as a designer. One of these skills is effective communication. Being able to clearly communicate ideas, concepts, and requirements to team members, clients, and stakeholders is essential in ensuring a smooth design process and achieving successful outcomes. Effective communication allows me to articulate my vision, collaborate effectively, and understand the needs and perspectives of others. Another important skill is adaptability. Design is a dynamic field that constantly evolves, and being adaptable is crucial in navigating changing trends, technologies, and client requirements. It allows me to embrace new challenges, learn quickly, and find creative solutions to complex problems. Continuous learning is another skill that has been instrumental in my design journey. What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

Starting as a fashion textile designer, I gained valuable experience in the commercial side of design while also nurturing my passion for artistic expression. This balance between commercial viability and artistic creativity has shaped my design approach and allowed me to develop a unique perspective. Currently, my focus is on creating designs with smart textiles that integrate technology seamlessly into fashion and functional wearables. This intersection of design and technology excites me and drives me to push boundaries and explore new possibilities. I find immense satisfaction in using design to improve the quality of people's lives and enhance their well-being. Looking ahead, our future plans revolve around expanding our efforts in the field of wellness. What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

Embrace challenges as opportunities for learning and personal development, and always be prepared to go the extra mile. What is your day to day look like?

SK : Each day as a designer brings new opportunities and challenges. My business morning usually starts with a cup of coffee and taking some time to center myself and prepare mentally for the day ahead. I like to read design news and stay updated on industry trends to stay inspired and informed. Once I'm in the studio, I dive into my design work. This involves brainstorming, sketching ideas, and collaborating with my team. We discuss concepts, exchange feedback, and continuously iterate on our designs to ensure we're delivering the best possible outcomes. While there are moments when the day may seem mundane or filled with administrative tasks, I find joy in the little things that bring excitement to my work day. It could be a breakthrough in the design process, a positive interaction with a team member, or seeing a prototype come to life. These moments of progress and achievement fuel my passion and keep me motivated. Throughout the day, I also make sure to take short breaks to clear my mind and recharge. Whether it's going for a walk, grabbing lunch with colleagues, or simply enjoying a moment of silence, these small moments of rejuvenation help maintain my focus and creativity. In the midst of a busy schedule, I try to find time for personal reflection and self-improvement. This may involve reviewing design principles, exploring new techniques, or seeking inspiration from art, nature, or everyday life. By nourishing my own creativity and well-being, I believe I can bring a fresh perspective to my design work. Overall, my day as a designer is a dynamic mix of creative exploration, collaboration, and personal growth. It's the small moments of joy, inspiration, and progress that make each day fulfilling and keep me excited about the design process.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

SK : As a designer, I believe it's essential to stay aware of the latest design trends while also maintaining my own personal design style. While trends can provide valuable insights into current consumer preferences and market demands, it's equally important to develop a unique design language and create products or projects that reflect my own artistic vision. I find inspiration for design trends from various sources. One way is by keeping a close eye on industry publications, design websites, and social media platforms that showcase the work of other designers and highlight emerging trends. I also attend design conferences, exhibitions, and workshops to stay connected with the design community and gain exposure to new ideas and concepts. However, I approach design trends with a discerning eye. Rather than blindly following every trend, I selectively incorporate elements that align with my design philosophy and enhance the functionality and aesthetic appeal of my creations. I aim to create designs that are not solely influenced by short-lived trends but have a timeless quality that resonates with people for years to come. Moreover, my multicultural environment plays a significant role in inspiring my design approach. How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

SK : Determining whether a product or project is well-designed involves considering several factors. For me, good design is defined by the following criteria: 1. Functionality: A well-designed product or project should effectively fulfill its intended purpose. It should be intuitive to use, efficient in its operations, and provide a seamless user experience. Functionality is crucial in ensuring that the design meets the needs and expectations of the users. 2. Aesthetic Appeal: Visual aesthetics play a significant role in good design. It involves creating a harmonious and visually pleasing composition that evokes positive emotions and resonates with the target audience. Aesthetics can enhance the overall user experience and create a lasting impression. 3. User-Centered Approach: Good design puts the user at the center. It considers the needs, preferences, and limitations of the users throughout the design process. User research, testing, and feedback are essential in understanding user perspectives and incorporating their insights into the design. 4. Innovation: Good design pushes boundaries and brings fresh perspectives. It embraces innovation, whether through novel technologies, materials, or conceptual ideas. Common mistakes to avoid in design include neglecting user needs, overcomplicating the design, sacrificing functionality for aesthetics, and disregarding sustainability. By being mindful of these pitfalls, designers can strive for excellence and create designs that are both visually pleasing and highly functional, while also making a positive impact on individuals and the world around us.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

SK : Deciding if a design is ready is a collaborative process that involves multiple factors and considerations. While it can be challenging to determine the exact moment when a design is complete and no further iterations are needed, there are key indicators that help guide the decision-making process. One aspect is meeting the design requirements and objectives. The design should effectively solve the problem it aims to address and fulfill the desired functionality. If the design meets these criteria and performs as intended, it is a strong indication that it is ready for implementation. User feedback and testing play a vital role in evaluating the readiness of a design. By involving users in the design process and gathering their insights, we can assess how well the design meets their needs and expectations. Feedback helps identify areas for improvement and ensures that the design resonates with the target audience. However, it's important to note that design is an iterative process, and there is always room for improvement. Even after a design is implemented, ongoing feedback and evaluation can uncover new opportunities for refinement and enhancement. Designers should keep an open mindset and continuously seek ways to make their designs better. The success of a product or project can be measured by various metrics, including user satisfaction, market acceptance, and achieving the desired outcomes. Positive user feedback, high adoption rates, and meeting or exceeding performance goals indicate that the design has been successful. What is your biggest design work?

SK : My biggest design work that I am especially proud of is the KnitWarm WarmerBand. This project holds a special place for me due to its combination of functionality and aesthetic appeal. The initial aspiration behind designing the WarmerBand was to create a versatile and effective solution for providing warmth and targeted therapy to different areas of the body. I wanted to design a product that not only fulfilled its practical purpose but also offered comfort and sustainability. The design process involved careful consideration of the materials used and the overall form of the band. I focused on creating a sleek and slim profile that would allow for easy wearing under clothing without adding bulk or discomfort. The use of recycled polyester from PET bottles not only aligned with our commitment to sustainability but also provided a soft and smooth texture that enhances the wearer's comfort. One of the key aspects that make the KnitWarm WarmerBand special is its versatility. The flexible nature of the band allows it to be wrapped around the waist, neck, or shoulders, providing targeted warmth and relief to specific muscle groups. The controlled constant temperature ensures a consistent and comfortable experience for the wearer. The project presented challenges in terms of balancing functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. It required extensive research, prototyping, and testing to ensure that the design met our high standards. The satisfaction that comes from this project stems from the positive impact it has on people's lives. Knowing that the KnitWarm WarmerBand provides both functional benefits and contributes to sustainability brings a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment. Currently, we are working on several exciting projects that build upon the foundation of the KnitWarm WarmerBand. We are exploring new designs and innovations in smart textiles to continue creating products that enhance well-being, comfort, and sustainability. These projects fuel our passion for design and drive us to constantly push the boundaries of what is possible.

Who is your favourite designer?

SK : One designer whom I greatly admire is the team behind Dyson. Their approach to design and technology integration has been truly impressive. They have successfully diversified their core technology and expanded into different product lines, consistently achieving success in the market. What sets them apart is not only their innovative designs but also their ability to create products that stand the test of time. Their designs are trendy and have a lasting appeal, avoiding the risk of becoming outdated quickly. This focus on durable and timeless design is something I truly appreciate. If I were given the chance to talk with a single deceased designer, I would be interested in conversing with Leonardo da Vinci. His wide range of talents and contributions in various fields, including art, science, and engineering, continue to inspire and fascinate me. His ability to bridge the gap between creativity and technical expertise is truly remarkable, and I would love to delve into his thought process and gain insights from his perspective. When it comes to iconic designers who have made a significant impact on our understanding of good design, I believe names like Dieter Rams, Charles and Ray Eames, and Philippe Starck come to mind. These designers have not only created visually appealing and functional designs but have also left a lasting legacy by shaping design principles and pushing boundaries in their respective fields. Overall, there are many architects, artists, and designers whom I greatly admire for their contributions to the design world. Their innovative thinking, attention to detail, and ability to create designs that evoke emotions and enhance experiences continue to inspire me in my own design journey.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

SK : I find Hong Kong, my birthplace and current residence, to be an inspiring city that influences my design aesthetic. The cultural heritage of Hong Kong, with its fusion of Eastern and Western influences, vibrant street culture, and fast-paced urban lifestyle, shapes my design approach. Drawing inspiration from the city's cultural heritage, I aim to seamlessly blend traditional elements with modern innovation in my designs. Incorporating techniques like knitted jacquard patterns pays homage to the rich textile traditions of Hong Kong. Living in a diverse and multicultural environment allows me to engage with people from different backgrounds, providing unique perspectives that enrich my design process. Hong Kong's global status also presents opportunities for collaborations with international brands and designers, expanding the reach of my work. By creating products that are durable and long-lasting, I aim to reduce waste and promote a more sustainable approach to consumption. This aligns with my belief in designing with a focus on longevity and considering the environmental impact of materials and production processes. In addition to sustainability, I strive to create products that have a purpose and a positive impact on people's lives. For example, with KnitWarm products, the portable thermal solutions not only provide warmth but also improve users' moods and well-being, enabling them to actively engage in their communities. By designing with a focus on functionality and emotional well-being, designers can contribute to the overall betterment of society. I am open to the idea of pro bono design work and have considered it in the past. I believe that artists, designers, and architects have unique skills and perspectives that can be valuable in humanitarian projects. Involving ourselves in such projects allows us to use our expertise to address social issues and contribute to community development. I actively participate in design events, conferences, and workshops to support and inspire young designers. It affirmed that my designs were appreciated and acknowledged by industry professionals, which boosted my confidence and motivated me to continue pushing boundaries in my design practice. 2. It was an excellent opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals, exchange ideas, and build valuable relationships.
