Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

VS : My experience spans over two decades, during which I have been deeply immersed in various aspects of design and architecture. As a designer, I’ve worked on numerous projects, ranging from residential buildings to bespoke furniture. My background as a civil engineer has given me a solid foundation in structural integrity and functionality, while my artistic sensibilities allow me to infuse creativity and aesthetics into my work. I believe that every design should tell a story, and I aim to create spaces that resonate with the emotions and experiences of their inhabitants.

How did you become a designer?

VS : My journey into design was a conscious choice. Initially, my studies in civil engineering provided me with the technical skills necessary for the field. However, my passion for design and creation was always present. I began to explore architectural principles and design philosophies, gradually transitioning from engineering to a more creative role. It was a culmination of my interests, skills, and a deep inner drive that led me to embrace design as my true calling.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

VS : My design philosophy revolves around simplicity and functionality, which I consider essential for any successful project. I prioritize sustainable materials and energy-efficient solutions, as I believe that design should harmonize with the environment. My style is minimalistic, emphasizing clean lines and open spaces that promote a sense of tranquility. I also make it a point to engage with the surroundings, ensuring that my designs respect and reflect the beauty of their location.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

VS : When I design, I experience a blend of excitement and introspection. The process of creation is incredibly fulfilling, as it allows me to express my inner thoughts and emotions through tangible forms. I often feel a deep sense of responsibility—knowing that my designs will have a lasting impact on people's lives. Ultimately, I strive to evoke emotions of comfort and joy in those who inhabit the spaces I create.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

VS : My background in civil engineering has profoundly influenced my approach to design. It has instilled in me a respect for structure and functionality, ensuring that my designs are not only beautiful but also practical and safe. Additionally, my experiences in various cultural contexts and exposure to different design philosophies have broadened my perspective, allowing me to draw inspiration from diverse sources. This unique blend of technical knowledge and creative exploration has shaped my identity as a designer. Several non-design skills have been instrumental in shaping my success as a designer. 1. Project Management: My ability to effectively manage projects has allowed me to oversee complex designs from conception to completion. This skill ensures that timelines are met and that all aspects of a project are coordinated seamlessly. 2. Communication Skills: Clear communication is vital in design. Whether working with clients, contractors, or collaborators, being able to articulate my vision and understand others’ perspectives has been crucial for successful outcomes. 3. Problem-Solving: Design often involves navigating unexpected challenges. My background has equipped me with strong analytical skills, enabling me to devise innovative solutions when faced with obstacles. 4. Financial Acumen: Understanding budgeting and financial constraints is essential. This knowledge helps me create designs that are not only creative but also feasible within the given financial parameters. 5. Cultural Awareness: Exposure to diverse cultures has enriched my design perspective. It helps me create spaces that resonate with different communities and fosters inclusivity. These skills have been beneficial because they create a solid foundation for my design work, allowing me to focus on creativity while ensuring practical and sustainable outcomes. The biggest influence on my design work has been the principles of modernist architects, particularly the likes of Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. Their commitment to functional beauty has inspired my approach to design. My journey has been one of continuous learning and adaptation—embracing challenges and seeking opportunities to grow and innovate.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

VS : My growth path has been multifaceted, involving personal development, the evolution of my design business, and a commitment to sustainability. I aim to deepen my expertise in eco-friendly design and explore cutting-edge technologies that can enhance my projects. In the future, I envision creating a luxury eco-friendly residential village, which aligns with my passion for sustainable living. I aspire to be remembered as a designer and developer who not only created beautiful spaces but also prioritized environmental responsibility and social impact. Currently, I am working on a green apartment building in Athens, but I have several ideas for projects that I have yet to realize due to time and resource constraints. One such project involves designing a community center that fosters creativity and collaboration among local artists and designers.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

VS : To emerging designers, I would advise: 1. Stay Curious: Always seek knowledge and be willing to learn. The design field is ever-evolving, and staying updated with trends and technologies is crucial. 2. Embrace Failure: Understand that setbacks are part of the journey. Each failure is an opportunity for growth and learning. 3. Build a Strong Network: Connect with mentors and peers in the industry. Their insights and experiences can be invaluable. 4. Focus on the Fundamentals: Master the basics of design principles before delving into complex concepts. A strong foundation will serve you well throughout your career. 5. Be Authentic: Stay true to your unique style and vision. Authenticity will resonate with clients and help you stand out in a crowded market. The best advice I received from a mentor was to always prioritize the user experience. Designing with the end-user in mind leads to more meaningful and impactful creations. I continuously grow my knowledge by attending workshops, participating in design forums, and collaborating with other creative minds.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

VS : To my fellow designers and architects, I would recommend the following best practices: 1. Prioritize Collaboration: Engage with other professionals, including engineers, clients, and craftsmen. A collaborative approach often yields the best results. 2. Stay Open-Minded: Be willing to explore new ideas and techniques. Innovation often comes from unexpected sources. 3. Learn from Critique: Embrace constructive criticism as a tool for improvement. The best designs often emerge from rigorous feedback and iteration. 4. Avoid Perfectionism: While striving for excellence is important, remember that perfection can hinder progress. Allow yourself to take risks and make mistakes. 5. Document Your Process: Keep a design journal or portfolio that showcases your thought process and evolution. This not only helps you reflect on your growth but also serves as a valuable resource for future projects. For those looking to get started in design, my advice is to start small. Work on personal projects or volunteer work to build your portfolio. Don’t be afraid to experiment; the early stages of your career are the perfect time to explore different styles and approaches.

What is your day to day look like?

VS : My daily routine is a blend of creative work, meetings, and continuous learning. I typically start my mornings with exercise, which sets a positive tone for the day. After that, I dive into my emails, I supervise my projects and after all this I catch up on design news and industry trends to stay informed about what's happening in the world of architecture and design. My mornings often include design brainstorming sessions with my team, where we exchange ideas and discuss ongoing projects. I find that collaboration at this stage is vital for creativity. I also allocate time for project management tasks, such as reviewing budgets and timelines. Throughout the day, I make it a point to step away from my desk and engage in a short walk and have lunch at a beautiful restaurant. These breaks help refresh my mind and spark new ideas. What I enjoy the most during a seemingly mundane business day are the small victories—like receiving positive feedback from a client or discovering a new design technique that inspires me. These moments fuel my passion and keep the excitement alive.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

VS : I actively follow the latest design trends, but I always filter them through my personal design philosophy. Trends can be valuable for inspiration, but I prefer to create designs that reflect my unique style and values rather than simply replicating what's popular at the moment. I aim to develop a collection or a project that stands the test of time rather than just catering to fleeting trends. To stay updated, I regularly read design journals, attend industry conferences, and participate in workshops. I also connect with fellow designers and artists, as their insights can provide fresh perspectives. My inspiration often comes from nature, art, and the cultural history of the places I work in. I believe that blending these elements with current trends can yield powerful and timeless designs.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

VS : Good design, for me, is defined by several key aspects: 1. Functionality: A well-designed product or project serves its purpose effectively and efficiently. 2. Aesthetics: It should be visually pleasing, with a balance of form and function. 3. Sustainability: Good design minimizes environmental impact and promotes sustainable practices. 4. User Experience: It should enhance the user's experience, making it intuitive and enjoyable. 5. Originality: A design that brings a fresh perspective or innovative solution stands out. The "aha!" moment comes when I see how a design seamlessly integrates functionality and beauty, often revealing a solution to a problem I hadn’t fully recognized before. Common mistakes to avoid include overcomplicating designs or neglecting user needs. A design is good when it resonates with people, fulfills its function, and stands out for its creativity.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

VS : Determining when a design is ready is a nuanced process. I usually reach a point where I can confidently say, "Yes, this design is complete." This moment often arises after thorough iterations and feedback from my team and clients. I consider a design ready when it meets all functional requirements, aesthetic goals, and sustainability criteria. While I believe that there is always room for improvement in design, I recognize the importance of knowing when to move on to other projects. I often keep a mental note of earlier designs and may revisit them later, but I have learned that perfection is an unattainable goal. Instead, I aim for excellence and practicality. A project is deemed successful when it fulfills its intended purpose, resonates with the users, and receives positive feedback from clients. If it sparks joy and enhances the quality of life for its inhabitants, then I know I’ve created something worthwhile.

What is your biggest design work?

VS : One of the projects I am most proud of is The Boomerang Athens, which involved the design and reconstruction of the first LEED GOLD building in Athens. This project was particularly significant for me because it represented a confluence of my passion for sustainable architecture and my desire to create spaces that enhance the quality of life for their inhabitants. My initial aspiration was to set a benchmark for environmentally responsible design in Greece. I aimed to demonstrate that luxury and sustainability can coexist harmoniously. The design process was a collaborative effort that involved extensive research into sustainable materials and techniques, as well as engaging with local communities for their insights. I believe it is my biggest work because it reflects my core values—innovation, sustainability, and functionality. What makes it special are its key aspects, such as the integration of green technologies, the use of local materials, and the design that encourages community interaction. The project presented several challenges, including navigating stringent building regulations and balancing sustainability with aesthetic appeal. However, overcoming these obstacles was incredibly rewarding. Currently, I am excited about a new project: a green apartment building in the heart of Athens, which aims to redefine urban living while maintaining eco-friendly practices.

Who is your favourite designer?

VS : I greatly admire Zaha Hadid for her groundbreaking approach to architecture. Her ability to push the boundaries of form and create dynamic, fluid structures has always inspired me. I also hold a deep respect for Frank Lloyd Wright, whose philosophy of organic architecture resonates with my own design values. If I could talk to any deceased designer, it would be Le Corbusier. His revolutionary ideas about urbanism and functionalism have significantly influenced modern architecture. I believe he is one of the most iconic designers of all time, as he fundamentally altered our understanding of space and design. In contemporary design, I am particularly inspired by Bjarke Ingels for his innovative and pragmatic approach to architecture, which focuses on sustainability and livability. These designers have shaped my thoughts on design and continue to influence my work.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

VS : My lifestyle is deeply connected to my passion for design and development. I find inspiration in the vibrant culture of cities that celebrate art, history, and innovation. One of my favorite cities is Madrid, Barcelona, New York, Paris, Milan and Tokyo; its unique blend of modernist architecture and rich cultural heritage is incredibly inspiring. Music plays a significant role in my creative process. I often listen to various genres while working, as it helps me focus and stimulates my imagination. I believe that my cultural background influences my design projects, as I strive to incorporate elements that reflect the essence of the places I work in. Currently, I am focused on projects that emphasize sustainable living and community engagement. I believe good design is essential for the advancement of society because it can improve quality of life and foster a sense of belonging. In my own life, I've introduced small but impactful changes, such as incorporating biophilic design principles in my home, which has enhanced my well-being.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

VS : My work culture is collaborative and open, encouraging creativity and innovation. I believe in fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their ideas. I often work with partners and a diverse team, as I find that collaboration leads to richer designs and solutions. When selecting business partners, I look for individuals who share a commitment to sustainability and quality. It’s crucial to have a shared vision and values, as this creates a strong foundation for successful collaborations. In hiring, I prioritize traits like adaptability, creativity, and a strong work ethic. One of the core challenges of my profession is balancing the creative aspect of design with the practicalities of project management and client expectations. My responsibilities involve overseeing projects from inception to completion, ensuring that they meet the highest standards of quality and sustainability. I believe that good designers, artists, and developers should possess characteristics such as curiosity, resilience, and empathy. These traits enable them to understand users’ needs and create designs that resonate on a deeper level.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

VS : As a designer, I believe in giving back to the community that has supported my journey. I actively engage in pro bono design work, particularly for non-profit organizations focused on social housing, education, and environmental sustainability. I see it as my responsibility to contribute to projects that improve the lives of others, especially those who lack access to quality design and architecture. I hold a strong opinion that artists, designers, and architects should involve themselves in humanitarian projects. Good design has the power to transform communities and uplift individuals, making it essential for us to lend our skills where they are needed most. I find fulfillment in creating spaces that foster inclusivity and support underrepresented communities. I also actively participate in design events, where I mentor young designers and provide them with opportunities to showcase their work. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I hope to inspire the next generation of creatives and help them navigate their own journeys in the design world.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

VS : Participating in the A' Design Award has been a rewarding experience. Three main benefits of engaging in design awards and competitions include: 1. Recognition and Visibility: Winning or even being nominated for a prestigious award elevates your profile in the industry, attracting potential clients and collaborators. 2. Networking Opportunities: Design competitions often bring together like-minded professionals, providing a platform to connect with other designers, architects, and industry leaders. These connections can lead to future collaborations and projects. 3. Skill Development: The process of preparing for a competition encourages you to refine your ideas and presentation skills, pushing you to critically evaluate your work and strive for excellence. I believe that design competitions are important and relevant because they foster innovation and creativity within the industry. They encourage designers to push boundaries and explore new ideas, ultimately raising the standard of design as a whole. Being named Designer of the Day is a tremendous honor. It acknowledges the hard work and dedication that go into each project, and it provides a platform to share my philosophy and vision with a broader audience. It’s gratifying to be recognized in this way, and it inspires me to continue pushing my creative boundaries.
