Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

GDG : In my design career, I've always aimed to progress and evolve, constantly pushing myself to improve as a designer. My primary motivation comes from the structures, objects, and reflections in nature that I encounter in my daily interactions. This inspiration fuels my creativity and drives me to design spaces that foster communication and connection among people. In my design studio, I strive to meet the needs of every client, emphasizing comfort, ergonomics, and applicability. I also place great importance on integrating technology into my designs. Digital art and design captivate me, as they blend visual effects with technology, creating a unique and immersive experience. For me, designing is not just about creating aesthetically pleasing spaces; it's about communicating and connecting with people through my work. Each project begins with a thorough exploration of the site and its requirements, ensuring that the final design is both functional and reflective of the intended emotions and personality.

How did you become a designer?

GDG : My journey to becoming a designer began at a very young age. When I was just five years old, I discovered a natural talent for drawing, which sparked my initial interest in the arts. This early passion for creating and illustrating led me to pursue formal education in fine arts, driven by a deep enthusiasm for art and design. Throughout my high school and university years, I remained committed to professionalizing my skills in design. My dedication was fueled by a childhood dream of becoming a successful designer. During this time, I continuously sought to improve and evolve as a designer, always aiming to refine my craft. My motivation to pursue a career in design is deeply rooted in my observations of structures, objects, and their reflections in nature. These elements within my environment have always inspired me and continue to be a significant source of creativity in my work.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

GDG : When designing, I prioritize several key aspects to ensure that my work is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Here are the top three aspects I give most importance to in my design process: 1)Comfort, Ergonomics, and Applicability: -Comfort and Ergonomics: These are crucial in creating spaces that people can use comfortably. I focus on designing spaces that not only look good but also feel good to inhabit, ensuring that they cater to the physical and psychological well-being of the users. -Applicability: It’s important that the designs are practical and meet the needs of the people who will use them. This involves a deep understanding of the functional requirements and ensuring that the design serves its intended purpose effectively. 2)Technology Integration: -Digital Tools and Latest Technology: I heavily rely on digital tools and the latest technology in my design process. The blending of visual effects with technology fascinates me and allows me to create more precise and sophisticated designs. -Computer-Aided Design and Renderings: While I often start with hand-drawn sketches to conceptualize ideas, I finalize my designs using computer programs. These tools enable me to create detailed renderings and simulations that help visualize the final product before it’s built. 3)Connection with Nature and Environment: -Harmony with Nature: A central theme in all my projects is creating a design that harmonizes with nature. This involves incorporating natural elements and ensuring that the design feels organic and in tune with its surroundings. -Environmental and Cultural Sensitivity: Living in Turkey, I draw inspiration from the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes. I strive to integrate these elements into my designs, creating spaces that reflect the local environment and cultural context. Design Technique and Approach: -Initial Exploration and Connection: When starting a new project, I first visit the site to understand its unique characteristics and requirements. I spend time exploring and ‘listening’ to the space to form a connection with it. -Conceptualization and Drafting: I begin by imagining the design in my mind, applying it to the physical space. I then prepare initial sketches and drafts, which I later refine using digital tools. -Integration of Functionality and Aesthetics: Throughout the design process, I maintain a balance between functionality and aesthetics. The design must not only fulfill practical needs but also evoke the desired emotions and personality. Mock-ups and Models: While I appreciate the tactile and tangible nature of physical models, I primarily use computer-aided design and renderings to visualize and refine my projects. This approach allows for greater flexibility and precision, enabling me to make adjustments quickly and accurately. In summary, my design process is deeply rooted in ensuring comfort and functionality, leveraging the latest technology, and maintaining a strong connection with nature and cultural context. This holistic approach allows me to create designs that are not only practical and beautiful but also meaningful and resonant with their environment.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

GDG : Designing is a deeply emotional and fulfilling process for me. Here are the emotions I typically experience throughout different phases of the design process: At the initial phase of conceptualizing a design is incredibly exciting. It’s a time when I feel a surge of creativity and inspiration. The possibilities seem endless, and the thrill of coming up with innovative ideas energizes me. This phase is like dancing to music that suddenly plays while walking on the road—spontaneous and exhilarating. As I begin to explore the site and gather information, I feel a strong sense of curiosity. Discovering the unique characteristics of the space and understanding the client's needs ignites a passion for finding the perfect design solution. During the design development phase, I experience a deep sense of engagement and focus. Translating initial ideas into detailed plans and renderings requires concentration and precision. This phase is intellectually stimulating and fulfilling as I work through challenges and refine the design. As the design takes shape, I feel a growing sense of joy and satisfaction. Each step forward, each problem solved, brings me closer to the final vision. Seeing the design evolve and improve is incredibly rewarding. As the design approaches completion, I feel a mix of anticipation and eagerness. The prospect of seeing the finished product and how it will impact users is highly motivating. This phase is filled with a sense of impending achievement. When the design is finally realized and implemented, I experience a profound sense of fulfillment and pride. It’s incredibly gratifying to see people interacting with the space, appreciating its functionality and beauty. This is the moment when I feel that all the hard work has paid off. The most exciting phase for me is the initial conceptualization. The freedom to explore new ideas and the thrill of innovation make this stage particularly exhilarating. However, the sense of fulfillment when the project is completed and seeing it come to life is also immensely rewarding. What I Like Most When Designing: I love the creative freedom that designing offers. The ability to innovate and come up with unique solutions is what I enjoy most about the process. Designing spaces that facilitate communication and connection among people is deeply satisfying. Knowing that my work can enhance people's lives and create positive experiences is what drives me. Designing fulfills me by allowing me to turn abstract ideas into tangible realities. The process of seeing a design move from concept to completion brings immense joy and a sense of accomplishment. There’s a unique pleasure in creating designs that resonate with people emotionally. Whether it’s a commercial space that delights customers or a serene environment that promotes well-being, the emotional connection that people have with my designs is highly fulfilling. Each design project is an opportunity for growth and learning. The continuous improvement of my craft and the pursuit of excellence keep me motivated and happy. In essence, designing is a source of profound pleasure and satisfaction for me. It’s a blend of excitement, curiosity, joy, and fulfillment that makes the entire process incredibly rewarding.

GDG : Several aspects of my background have significantly shaped me as a designer, contributing to my success and helping me develop a unique approach to my work. Here are some valuable non-design skills that have been instrumental in my journey: 1)Observation and Attention to Detail: -Skill: Keen observation and attention to detail are crucial skills for any designer. These abilities allow me to notice the subtle elements in nature, structures, and everyday objects that often inspire my designs. -Benefit: Being observant helps me draw inspiration from my surroundings and ensures that my designs are thorough and meticulously crafted. It allows me to see potential in spaces and objects that others might overlook, leading to more innovative and thoughtful designs. 2)Communication and Interpersonal Skills: -Skill: Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills are essential for collaborating with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders. They help in understanding clients' needs and translating those into successful designs. -Benefit: These skills have allowed me to build strong relationships with my clients and team members, facilitating smoother project execution and ensuring that the designs meet or exceed expectations. Good communication also ensures that I can articulate my vision clearly and persuasively. 3)Time Management and Organization: -Skill: Time management and organizational skills are critical for handling multiple projects and meeting deadlines. These skills help in prioritizing tasks and maintaining a structured workflow. -Benefit: Efficient time management has enabled me to deliver high-quality work consistently, even under tight deadlines. My interaction with the environment profoundly influences my design philosophy, driving me to create harmonious and organic designs. The rich architectural legacy and cultural diversity of Turkey have significantly influenced my work. The geometric forms and patterns from Turkish-Islamic art often inspire my designs, adding a unique cultural dimension to my projects. My journey as a designer began at the age of five when I discovered my talent for drawing. This early interest led me to pursue fine arts through high school and university, where I focused on professionalizing my skills. My first major project, designing a waffle shop, marked a turning point in my career. It was the first time my design was implemented in a real-world setting, reinforcing my passion for the field. Over the years, I have established my design studio, specializing in commercial spaces and integrating technology into my work. My design journey has been one of continuous growth, driven by a commitment to innovation and excellence. What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

GDG : My growth path as a designer encompasses both personal and professional aspirations, as well as the evolution of my design studio. I am committed to continual learning and skill development, both as an individual designer and as a leader of my design studio. This involves seeking out opportunities for professional development, such as attending workshops, conferences, and networking events. I strive to stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in the field of design, and to integrate these insights into my work. As the founder of my design studio, I am focused on growing and expanding our business. This includes increasing our client base, expanding our service offerings, and exploring new markets and opportunities for collaboration. I aim to build a team of talented and passionate designers who share my vision and values, and to create a supportive and inspiring work environment where creativity can flourish. Creativity and innovation are at the heart of my design philosophy. I am constantly seeking out new ideas, inspiration, and design concepts, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in design. I aspire to create designs that not only meet the needs and desires of our clients, but also inspire and delight users, and make a positive impact on the world. In the future, I hope to be remembered as a designer who made a meaningful and lasting impact on the world through my work. I aspire to create designs that are not only beautiful and functional, but also socially and environmentally responsible. I want my designs to contribute positively to the well-being of individuals and communities, and to inspire future generations of designers to think creatively and ethically about the built environment. In terms of future design projects, I have several ideas and concepts that I am excited to explore. These include designing sustainable and eco-friendly spaces, incorporating biophilic design principles, and creating innovative solutions to address pressing social and environmental challenges. I am particularly interested in projects that involve community engagement and collaboration, and that have the potential to make a real difference in people's lives. My dream design project is to create a sustainable community center that serves as a hub for creativity, collaboration, and social engagement. This community center would be a multifunctional space designed to meet the diverse needs of the local community while promoting environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

GDG : Being open-minded, free-spirited and dreamy will open many doors they dream of. In order to open these doors to the end, my advice to them is to devote themselves to the work they love and to have a consistent work discipline on this path.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

GDG : As a designer, I think the designer's perspective on the world is important. I think the designer should communicate with a universal language. The person should be able to establish a relationship with his/her environment through his/her design. I think it is important to have a wide imagination and way of thinking. The most important thing is the ability to convey what he/she thinks.

What is your day to day look like?

GDG : First thing in the morning I greet the sun. I plan my day while having breakfast. Depending on my mood that day, I either work from home or go to the office and work in the office. At 10.36 a.m. I drink a Turkish coffee. I continue working with music. At the end of the day, after seeing the sun off, I study a foreign language, read a book, take care of myself and prepare for the next day.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

GDG : As a designer, I believe it's essential to strike a balance between staying informed about the latest design trends and maintaining a distinct personal design style. While I appreciate the value of staying informed about the latest design trends, I prioritize maintaining my own unique design aesthetic and style. I believe that authenticity and originality are key to creating timeless and impactful designs. Rather than blindly following trends, I aim to integrate elements that resonate with my personal vision and design philosophy, while also considering the needs and preferences of my clients and target audience. My goal is to create designs that reflect my own creative vision and ethos, rather than simply chasing what's fashionable or trendy. I believe that staying true to my design principles and values ultimately leads to more meaningful and authentic design outcomes. I strive to develop a cohesive body of work that embodies my signature style and leaves a lasting impression on viewers, rather than producing designs that are fleeting and ephemeral. That being said, I do pay attention to emerging design trends and innovations, particularly those that align with my design philosophy and resonate with my aesthetic sensibilities. I selectively incorporate elements of these trends into my work, blending them with my own unique perspective to create fresh and innovative designs. However, I am cautious not to overemphasize trends at the expense of timeless design principles and functionality. I believe that good design should stand the test of time and remain relevant beyond fleeting trends. My sources of inspiration are diverse and eclectic, drawing from a wide range of influences including nature, art, architecture, culture, and technology. I find inspiration in everyday experiences, as well as in more specialized sources such as design publications, exhibitions, and online platforms. I also value the importance of collaboration and dialogue with other designers and creative professionals, as well as engaging with the broader design community through workshops, conferences, and networking events. In summary, while I remain attentive to the latest design trends and innovations, I prioritize maintaining my own distinct design style and vision. I believe that by selectively integrating elements of trends that resonate with my personal aesthetic, I can create designs that are both contemporary and enduring, while staying true to my own creative identity.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

GDG : Deciding if a design is ready is a nuanced process that involves a combination of intuition, experience, and objective evaluation. The first step in determining if a design is ready is to ensure that it meets the objectives and requirements set forth at the outset of the project. This involves assessing whether the design effectively addresses the functional, aesthetic, and contextual considerations outlined in the brief. I evaluate whether the design aligns with the client's vision and goals, as well as whether it fulfills the needs and expectations of the end-users. If the design successfully achieves its intended purpose and objectives, it is a strong indicator that it may be ready for implementation. Design is inherently iterative, and I often seek feedback from clients, colleagues, and stakeholders throughout the design process. This feedback loop allows me to refine and improve the design based on input from others and ensures that it evolves in response to changing requirements or preferences. When the feedback converges towards positive responses and there are diminishing returns in making further iterations, it signals that the design may be nearing completion. A key aspect of determining if a design is ready is ensuring that it exhibits a high level of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and quality. This involves scrutinizing every aspect of the design, from the overall composition to the smallest details, to ensure that it meets the highest standards of excellence. When I feel confident that every element of the design has been meticulously considered and executed to the best of my ability, it indicates that the design may be ready for finalization. Ultimately, deciding if a design is ready often comes down to a gut feeling or intuition. After spending significant time and effort on a project, there comes a moment when I simply know in my heart that the design is complete and ready to be realized. This intuitive sense of readiness is informed by years of experience, a deep understanding of design principles, and a passion for creating meaningful and impactful work. While a design can reach a point where it meets the criteria for readiness, there is always room for improvement and refinement. Design is a continuous process of evolution and iteration, and even after a design is implemented, there may be opportunities for further optimization or enhancement. As for determining the success of a product or project, it often involves a combination of qualitative and quantitative measures. Success can be measured by factors such as user satisfaction, functionality, aesthetic appeal, impact on the intended audience, and achieving the project's objectives and goals. Additionally, feedback from stakeholders, positive reviews, awards or recognition, and achieving desired outcomes or performance metrics are all indicators of success.
