Interview with Jonathan Ramirez

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

JR : I have over 15 years of experience in the design industry, working for prominent companies such as Dieste Inc., VMLY&R, and Digitas, among others. I've had the privilege of working with great clients like Boehringer Ingelheim, Honda, and Coca-Cola. My educational background includes a degree in Professional Advertising from Universidad Católica and training in Graphic Design from Ingecomputo.

How did you become a designer?

JR : I've always been passionate about creativity and innovation, which is what drew me to design. I started my journey by studying Graphic Design at Ingecomputo and honing my skills as an Art Director. I was fortunate to have mentors who supported and inspired me along the way, guiding me towards a successful career in design.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

JR : When designing, I prioritize creativity, innovation, and collaboration. I believe in creating visually compelling designs that resonate with the audience. I rely on a combination of digital tools and hands-on techniques to bring my ideas to life, and I always strive to push the boundaries of design to create impactful and memorable work.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

JR : Designing is an exhilarating process for me, and I feel a range of emotions throughout. The most exciting phase is the initial idea generation, where anything is possible. Seeing a project come to life and knowing that it will make a positive impact is incredibly fulfilling and brings me great joy.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

JR : My background in advertising and graphic design has equipped me with a diverse skill set that has been invaluable throughout my career. In addition to design skills, I've developed strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities, which have been essential to my success as a designer. My wife, who is a copywriter, has also been a huge influence on my work, providing valuable insights and creative input.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

JR : My future plans include continuing to push the boundaries of design and innovation, and to collaborate with talented individuals to create impactful and memorable work. My dream design project would be to work on a large-scale public installation that inspires and engages the community.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

JR : My advice to young designers is to never stop learning and experimenting. Be open to new ideas and perspectives, and don't be afraid to take risks. Surround yourself with talented and supportive people, and always strive to push the boundaries of your creativity.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

JR : My advice to fellow designers is to stay true to your vision and never compromise on quality. Always put the needs of your clients first, and never stop pushing yourself to innovate and create. Remember that success is a journey, not a destination, so enjoy the process and always keep learning and growing.

What is your day to day look like?

JR : My day typically starts with reviewing project deadlines and priorities. I spend a lot of time brainstorming ideas, collaborating with my wife thinking concepts, and meeting with clients to discuss project updates and feedback. I also dedicate time to staying up-to-date with the latest design trends and techniques.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

JR : I believe it's important to stay informed about the latest design trends and innovations, but I also think it's essential to develop your own unique style and aesthetic. I draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including art, fashion, and technology, and I'm always looking for new and innovative ways to push the boundaries of design.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

JR : For me, good design is about more than just aesthetics; it's about solving problems and creating meaningful experiences. A well-designed product or project is one that effectively meets the needs of its users while also being visually compelling and engaging. I believe that good design should be intuitive, accessible, and innovative, and should ultimately improve the lives of the people who interact with it.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

JR : I know a design is ready when it effectively communicates the intended message or function and resonates with its intended audience. While there's always room for improvement, there comes a point where further iteration doesn't significantly enhance the design. At that point, it's important to trust your instincts and move forward with confidence.

What is your biggest design work?

JR : One of my biggest design projects was a campaign I worked on for International Amnesty, which won several awards, including Gold at the LUUM Awards and a Shortlist at Cannes Lions. I'm especially proud of this project because it effectively communicated the client's message and had a positive impact on society.

Who is your favourite designer?

JR : One of my favorite designers is Alberto Mielgo. His iconic work has had a profound influence on the design industry, and I admire his creativity, innovation, and commitment to excellence.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

JR : I'm originally from Colombia, but I currently live and work in the United States. My cultural background has had a significant influence on my design work, and I draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including art, music, and literature. In my free time, I enjoy exploring new cities, Playing soccer, and spending time with my family.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

JR : My work culture is collaborative, creative, and results-driven. I believe in fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their ideas and expertise. I believe that by working together, we can achieve great things and create meaningful and impactful design solutions.

JR : Participating in the A’ Design Award has been a truly rewarding experience for me. It has provided me with the opportunity to showcase my work on a global stage and connect with other talented designers and creatives from around the world. The feedback and recognition I've received through the A’ Design Award have been incredibly valuable and have helped me to grow and develop as a designer.
