Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

BL : I’ve been in the design industry for over a decade, honing my skills and exploring various facets of design. My journey began with a solid educational foundation, earning a Master’s degree in Fine Arts with a focus on Interaction Design from the California College of the Arts. This academic background provided me with a strong understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of design. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some prominent companies, including Yahoo, Fisker, and Tencent. These experiences have allowed me to work on diverse projects, from digital interfaces to automotive design, each presenting unique challenges and learning opportunities. At Yahoo, I contributed to enhancing user experiences on a global scale, while at Fisker, I delved into the world of sustainable automotive design. My time at Tencent further broadened my horizons, exposing me to cutting-edge technology and innovative design solutions. In addition to these roles, I’ve collaborated with various notable clients on freelance projects. One of my most rewarding experiences was working with BrightSideGoods, where I developed a visual identity that seamlessly integrates sustainability and modern elegance. This project earned recognition and awards, highlighting my ability to create impactful and meaningful designs. Throughout my career, I’ve been driven by a passion for creating designs that not only look beautiful but also improve user experiences and promote sustainability. How did you become a designer?

BL : ’ve always had a deep passion for creativity and visual storytelling, which naturally led me to the field of design. As a child, I was constantly sketching and bringing my imaginative ideas to life in my sketchbooks. This creative outlet was my playground, where my ideas could roam free. High school drawing classes further opened my eyes to the potential of turning these creative inclinations into a career. I chose to pursue a career in design because I was drawn to the blend of aesthetics and functionality. Initially, I was fascinated by industrial design, which combines art and engineering to create products that are both beautiful and practical. This interest deepened during my undergraduate studies, where I explored various aspects of design and discovered my true passion for communication through visuals. What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

BL : When designing, my priorities are centered around three key aspects: user experience, sustainability, and aesthetics. These principles guide my process, ensuring that each project is impactful, responsible, and visually appealing. In terms of technique, I rely heavily on digital tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and CAD software for precise design work and renderings. However, I also value the tactile process of creating mock-ups and physical models, especially in the early stages of design. This hands-on approach allows me to explore forms, materials, and user interactions in a tangible way, which is crucial for refining concepts. When approaching a new project, I begin with thorough research and brainstorming sessions to gather insights and define the project goals. I then move into sketching and prototyping, iterating based on feedback and testing. This iterative process ensures that the final design is well-rounded, meeting both the functional requirements and the aesthetic aspirations of the project. Overall, my design process is a blend of user-focused research, sustainable practices, and a strong emphasis on aesthetics, utilizing both digital tools and hands-on techniques to create impactful and meaningful designs.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

BL : When I’m designing, I experience a range of emotions that make the process both fulfilling and exhilarating. The initial phase of brainstorming and coming up with ideas is incredibly exciting. This is when my creativity flows freely, and the possibilities seem endless. There’s a sense of curiosity and anticipation as I explore different concepts and envision how they might come to life. As I move into the journey of design, I feel a deep sense of engagement and focus. This phase, where I refine ideas, create prototypes, and iterate based on feedback, is both challenging and rewarding. I enjoy problem-solving and finding innovative solutions, which keeps me motivated and passionate about the work. The collaboration with clients and team members during this stage also brings a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose. The most thrilling moment, however, is seeing the final product or finished project. There’s a profound sense of accomplishment and pride when a design that started as a mere idea becomes a tangible reality. Knowing that my work will positively impact users and contribute to their experience is incredibly satisfying. This fulfillment is what drives me to continue pushing the boundaries of my creativity and skills.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

BL : Several aspects of my background have significantly shaped me as a designer, with non-design skills playing a crucial role in my success. My ability to empathize with users and communicate effectively has been invaluable. Understanding user needs, emotions, and pain points allows me to create designs that truly resonate and solve real problems. Effective communication skills help in collaborating with clients and team members, ensuring that everyone is aligned and working towards the same goals. My background in industrial design and interaction design has honed my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. These skills are essential for navigating complex design challenges and finding innovative solutions. They enable me to approach problems methodically and creatively, ensuring that the final design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Growing up in Chibi, China, and later studying and working in diverse environments, I’ve developed a strong sense of cultural awareness and sensitivity. This skill helps me create designs that are inclusive and resonate with a global audience. It also allows me to draw inspiration from different cultural contexts, enriching my design work. The design field is constantly evolving, and my adaptability and commitment to lifelong learning have been essential. Staying updated with the latest design trends, tools, and technologies allows me to remain relevant and innovative in my work. This adaptability also helps me embrace new challenges and opportunities with confidence. My interest in photography has greatly influenced my design work. Photography teaches me to appreciate composition, light, and detail, which are crucial elements in creating visually appealing designs. It also enhances my ability to tell stories through visuals, adding depth and meaning to my work.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

BL : My growth path as a designer has been a continuous journey of learning, adapting, and pushing boundaries. I started with a strong foundation in industrial design and interaction design, which has evolved through various professional experiences at companies like Yahoo, Fisker, and Tencent. Each role has taught me different aspects of design, from user-centered interfaces to sustainable product development. Looking forward, I aim to further develop my expertise in sustainable design and user experience. I am particularly interested in integrating new technologies such as AR and VR to create more immersive and interactive design solutions. My goal is to stay at the forefront of design innovation, continually enhancing my skills and knowledge. In the future, I see myself taking on larger, more impactful projects that address significant societal and environmental issues. One of my dream projects is to design a sustainable, smart home system that integrates renewable energy solutions with cutting-edge technology to create a harmonious living environment. This project would not only focus on aesthetics and functionality but also on making a positive environmental impact. I also plan to continue working on projects that promote sustainability and improve daily life. One idea I’ve been passionate about is developing eco-friendly packaging solutions that can significantly reduce waste. This would involve researching and designing materials that are biodegradable and can be easily integrated into existing systems. In the long term, I aspire to be remembered as a designer who made a meaningful impact through innovative, sustainable, and user-centered design. I want to inspire future designers to think critically about the environmental and societal implications of their work. By fostering a design philosophy that values sustainability and user experience, I hope to contribute to a better, more responsible design industry. **Upcoming Projects** Currently, I’m excited about a few projects in the pipeline, including designing user interfaces for IoT-enabled home appliances. This project aims to enhance the way we interact with everyday devices, making them more intuitive and energy-efficient. Additionally, I am exploring opportunities to collaborate with other designers on public awareness campaigns that encourage sustainable living practices.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

BL : For designers just starting out, my main advice is to stay curious and keep learning. The design field is constantly evolving, so be open to new skills, tools, and techniques. Take courses, attend workshops, and stay updated with the latest trends. Always seek feedback and embrace criticism—it’s invaluable for growth. Remember, every piece of feedback is an opportunity to learn and improve. Networking is also crucial. Connect with other designers, join design communities, and participate in design events. You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

BL : Always prioritize user experience in your designs and stay curious by continually learning new skills and trends. Embrace feedback and collaborate with others to gain fresh perspectives. Build a strong, diverse portfolio and balance aesthetics with functionality. Stay organized, manage your time well, and maintain your unique style and authenticity. Avoid common biases and be willing to experiment and innovate.

What is your day to day look like?

BL : An ideal day as a visual designer starts with a cup of hot tea and a design podcast. Lately, I’ve been really into the “Design Better” podcast. It’s a great way to refresh my mind in the morning and get inspired by hearing about what designers in various fields are working on and picking up tips that spark creativity. After that, I dive into my design work, fully focused and immersed in the creative process. When I need a break, I like to step outside and enjoy some fresh air, taking in the beauty of the plants around me. It’s a great way to recharge and come back to my work with a clear mind and renewed energy.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

BL : I keep up with the latest design trends by regularly engaging with various design communities and resources. This includes following design blogs, reading industry publications, and attending conferences and webinars. I also stay active on platforms like Behance and Dribbble to see what other designers are working on and to gather inspiration. Social media channels, especially LinkedIn and Instagram, are great for discovering new trends and connecting with fellow designers. Design trends do matter to some extent as they reflect current user preferences and technological advancements. Staying updated with trends ensures that my designs remain relevant and appealing to modern audiences. However, it’s important to balance trends with timeless design principles. While trends can guide and inspire, the core of my design work focuses on functionality, user experience, and sustainability. Trends should enhance these principles, not overshadow them.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

BL : Good design, to me, is defined by a blend of functionality, user experience, and aesthetics. It should solve real problems and meet user needs effectively while being intuitive and easy to use. Good design is also visually appealing, with a clear and cohesive aesthetic that resonates with its audience. Moreover, good design should be sustainable and considerate of its environmental impact. It balances current trends with timeless principles, ensuring it remains relevant and impactful over time. Ultimately, good design is about creating meaningful and positive experiences for users, enhancing their interactions and leaving a lasting impression.

What is your biggest design work?

BL : One of my biggest design works that I’m especially proud of is the visual identity for BrightSideGoods. This project was particularly significant because it beautifully encapsulated my passion for sustainability and modern elegance, and it allowed me to create a cohesive brand identity from scratch. BrightSideGoods approached me to develop a visual identity that would reflect their ethos of sustainability and modern living. My initial aspiration was to create a brand identity that not only looked appealing but also communicated the brand’s commitment to eco-conscious practices. The design process started with in-depth discussions with the BrightSideGoods team to understand their vision, values, and the message they wanted to convey. I drew inspiration from natural elements, focusing on simplicity and organic forms. The logo design, which combines the shape of a heart and the letter ‘B,’ along with elements like a sofa and lamp, was intended to symbolize compassion, sustainability, comfort, and brightness. I consider this my biggest and best work because it successfully balances aesthetics with sustainability, creating a visual identity that is both beautiful and meaningful. The project received recognition and awards, which affirmed the impact and quality of the design. Its key aspects include the thoughtful integration of eco-friendly practices and the ability to resonate deeply with the target audience. One of the main challenges was ensuring that every aspect of the design, from the logo to the packaging materials, reflected the brand’s commitment to sustainability. This involved extensive research and collaboration with the BrightSideGoods team to select the best materials and design elements. Overcoming these challenges was incredibly satisfying, as it reinforced my belief in the power of design to influence positive change. Currently, I’m excited about working on projects related to smart home appliances, focusing on enhancing user interaction through intuitive and energy-efficient designs. These projects allow me to integrate cutting-edge technology with my design principles, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in user-centered design. Who is your favourite designer?

BL : My favorite designer is Kenya Hara. I admire his work because it beautifully blends simplicity with profound thoughtfulness. Hara’s designs emphasize natural beauty and the essence of everyday objects, making them not only aesthetically pleasing but also deeply meaningful. His approach to design goes beyond functionality, exploring how design can influence human experience and perception. If I had the chance to talk with a deceased designer, it would be Dieter Rams. His principles of good design, focusing on simplicity, functionality, and sustainability, have significantly shaped modern design. His work with Braun set a high standard for product design, and his philosophy continues to inspire and guide designers globally. Overall, I greatly admire both Kenya Hara and Dieter Rams for their innovative and impactful contributions to the design world. Their commitment to thoughtful, user-centered design and their ability to create enduring, iconic works make them standout figures in the industry.

BL : Sure! My lifestyle is deeply influenced by my cultural background and my passion for design. Originally from Chibi in China’s Hubei province, I was raised in a city embraced by islands, each a quiet guardian of my childhood. I moved to San Francisco for my graduate studies, earning a Master’s degree in Fine Arts with a focus on Interaction Design from the California College of the Arts. Living in San Francisco for three years exposed me to a vibrant, diverse culture and a dynamic design community. The city’s innovative spirit and its commitment to sustainability resonate with my own values and have been a constant source of inspiration.
