Interview with FLAVIEN NEYERTZ

FLAVIEN NEYERTZ ("FN") interviewed on Monday, 2 September.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

FN : With over 10 years in the design industry, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a range of prominent companies and clients, including Searider, Orange-Circle (design agency in Shanghai) Bosch, Colgate, Markor etc. My educational background includes Mechanical Engineer and Industrial Design, which laid the foundation for my career. I've been involved in diverse projects, from consumer products to high-end furniture and transportation design, which have significantly shaped my expertise and professional growth.

How did you become a designer?

FN : My journey into design began with a deep-seated passion for creating functional and aesthetically pleasing objects. I was inspired by Mitja Borkert (Lamborghini Head of Design) and Andrea Ferraresi (Ducati Design Director), which drove me to pursue formal education in design. Starting with foundational courses and internships, I gradually gained experience and honed my skills through hands-on projects and collaboration with industry professionals. The combination of my intrinsic motivation and external influences led me to a fulfilling career in design.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

FN : When designing, I prioritise functionality, aesthetics, and user experience. My technique involves a blend of digital tools and hands-on methods, including sketching, 3D modelling, and creating physical prototypes. I approach each project with a focus on integrating these aspects to ensure that the final product is both innovative and practical. My style is characterised by a balance of form and function, emphasising clean lines and thoughtful detail.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

FN : Designing evokes a range of emotions, from excitement during the initial idea phase to fulfillment as the project comes to fruition. The most thrilling part is seeing a concept evolve into a tangible product, and the process of refinement and problem-solving brings a sense of accomplishment. Designing offers a creative outlet that fulfills me and provides joy through the realization of new ideas.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

FN : Valuable non-design skills such as project management, communication, and problem-solving have significantly contributed to my success as a designer. These skills have enabled me to effectively collaborate with teams, manage complex projects, and address challenges creatively. Influences from mentors and experiences throughout my career have shaped my approach to design, emphasizing the importance of these skills in achieving successful outcomes.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

FN : My growth path includes expanding the Searider lineup with new and innovative watercraft models. My future plans involve integrating advanced technologies and refining design features to set new industry standards. My dream design project would involve developing a groundbreaking watercraft or vehicle that combines cutting-edge technology with exceptional performance and sustainability, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the industry.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

FN : For young designers, I advise focusing on building a strong portfolio, seeking mentorship, and gaining diverse experiences. It’s important to stay curious and open to learning, as the design field is constantly evolving. Overcoming challenges and continuously improving your skills will contribute to your growth and success in the industry.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

FN : I suggest fellow professionals focus on understanding their clients’ needs, staying updated with industry trends, and embracing innovation. Avoid common pitfalls such as overcomplicating designs or ignoring user feedback. Building a strong network and continuously seeking inspiration can also enhance your work and career growth.

What is your day to day look like?

FN : My daily routine starts with reviewing project updates and setting priorities for the day. I spend time collaborating with team members, working on design tasks, and meeting with clients or stakeholders. Small things like a productive brainstorming session or successfully solving a design challenge keep me engaged and motivated throughout the day.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

FN : I keep up with design trends through industry publications, conferences, and networking with peers. While I value trends for their influence on current design practices, I strive to balance them with my own style and vision. Trends offer valuable insights but should be integrated thoughtfully to maintain originality in design.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

FN : Good design is defined by its functionality, aesthetics, and user experience. A well-designed product meets its intended purpose effectively, looks appealing, and provides a positive user experience. Common mistakes to avoid include neglecting user needs or overemphasizing form at the expense of function. I evaluate design success by how well it integrates these elements.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

FN : I determine a design is ready when it meets all project requirements, functions as intended, and has been thoroughly tested and refined. While there is always room for improvement, a design is considered complete when it achieves the set goals and constraints effectively. I make the decision to move on based on a comprehensive review and feedback from stakeholders.

What is your biggest design work?

FN : My biggest design work is the Searider watercraft, which involved extensive research, development, and innovation. This project was significant due to its complexity and the impact it has made in the industry. The design combines advanced technology with functional performance, showcasing my ability to address intricate design challenges and deliver a successful product.

Who is your favourite designer?

FN : I find Andrea Farrerasi, Ducati’s Design Director; Mitja Borkert, Lamborghini’s Head of Design; and Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari’s Head of Design, to be particularly inspiring. Andrea Farrerasi’s work excels in blending high performance with captivating visual appeal in motorcycle design. Mitja Borkert’s innovative approach at Lamborghini has resulted in some of the most iconic and forward-thinking vehicles, while Flavio Manzoni’s transformative designs at Ferrari push the boundaries of automotive aesthetics. If I could speak with a deceased designer, I would choose Ettore Bugatti, whose pioneering approach to automotive design and engineering left a profound legacy. Charles and Ray Eames are also highly influential for their innovative and timeless contributions to furniture and architecture, which continue to shape and inspire contemporary design principles.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

FN : Living in Athens/Greece, I find inspiration in its rich cultural heritage and dynamic environment. Music and local culture play a significant role in my creative process. My cultural background influences my design approach, adding unique perspectives and values that enrich my work. Good design is essential for societal advancement, reflecting and enhancing the quality of life.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

FN : My work culture emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and open communication. I value partnerships that align with these principles and seek individuals who are passionate and proactive. A good designer should possess creativity, problem-solving skills, and adaptability. My philosophy centers on creating impactful designs that meet client needs and contribute positively to the industry.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

FN : I contribute to society by engaging in pro bono design work and supporting community initiatives. I believe in using my skills to address humanitarian needs and support young designers through mentoring and participating in design events. My involvement in these activities reflects my commitment to giving back and fostering a positive impact through design.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

FN : Participating in design awards like the A’ Design Award has provided numerous benefits, including increased visibility, valuable feedback, and networking opportunities. These awards highlight outstanding work, offer recognition, and can significantly contribute to career advancement. Being named Designer of the Day was a particularly rewarding experience, affirming the value of creative innovation and excellence
