JW : I've dedicated over a decade to the realm of artistry, specialising in sculpture and installation art. I pursued my passion for art by completing my undergraduate degree in Taiwan and then furthering my education by obtaining graduate degrees in the UK. My formal education, combined with relentless exploration and experimentation, has sculpted my craft. I've had the privilege of showcasing my work at exhibitions and galleries, delving into themes that range from the introspective to the interactive. My works are primarily sought after by private collectors, and I have had the privilege of undertaking public art commissions from national institutions as well.
JW : Art became the language through which I could convey the intricacies of my emotions, thoughts, and perceptions. It was a means to connect with others on a profound, soul-stirring level. Life, as it often does, unfolded in a series of serendipitous moments and deliberate choices. While my artistic inclinations were evident from an early age, the realisation of my passion for design gradually revealed itself. It was an evolution, a natural progression that allowed me to explore the interplay between aesthetics and functionality, expanding the boundaries of my creative pursuits.
JW : As an artist, my foremost priorities in design are storytelling, emotion, and immersion. I believe that every piece should convey a narrative, evoke emotions, and provide a deeply immersive experience. I transform concepts into artworks predominantly through hand sketching and creating physical models, a process I consider essential as a professionally trained artist. While digital tools and new technologies play a significant role in later stages, they serve to amplify and realise the vision that begins with the tactile, hands-on approach. This fusion of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology ensures that my ideas are not only envisioned but also crafted with precision and depth. My approach is a fusion of meticulous planning, experimentation, and a touch of serendipity to create unique, meaningful art experiences.
JW : The initial idea phase is thrilling, sparking the imagination. Yet, it's the journey of design that truly invigorates me – the iterative process of shaping an abstract concept into a tangible creation. The ultimate joy lies in seeing the final product, witnessing the idea materialise into a work of art. Designing fulfils me by allowing me to express my innermost thoughts and emotions, creating a profound sense of happiness and the gratification that comes from turning ideas into tangible, meaningful realities.
JW : My deep passion for travel and a profound fascination with diverse world cultures have profoundly enriched my life, offering invaluable contributions to my creative pursuits. By traveling and studying art and design in different countries, my horizons have expanded significantly. This experience has instilled in me adaptability, cross-cultural awareness, and a distinctive tapestry of design influences. These facets of my background empower me with a multifaceted approach to design, allowing me to craft solutions that seamlessly merge aesthetic allure with functionality and cultural resonance.
JW : My artistic journey is a continuous evolution, with a commitment to pushing creative boundaries. In the future, I aspire to embark on ambitious, large-scale public art installations that engage communities. My dream project involves integrating technology and sustainability into monumental, interactive sculptures. My path is marked by a desire to create more immersive experiences and break new ground in the intersection of art, design, and technology. There are many ideas waiting to be brought to life, but I envision myself designing spaces and structures that foster connections and leave lasting impacts.
JW : Never lose sight of your initial vision. Stay ravenously ambitious and let your fervour for art and design burn brightly.
JW : For aspiring designers, artists, and architects, my advice is to stay true to your passion and vision. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and remain open to learning and diverse influences. Success often comes through resilience and dedication.
JW : Balancing the roles of an artist and university teacher, my days are dynamic. The day involves studio work and enriching discussions. Design news and artistic exploration are interwoven throughout, infusing my routine with fresh perspectives. The joy lies in the small things - a student's 'aha' moment, sculpting a particularly evocative form, or uncovering inspiration in the mundane. The magic is in the daily pursuit of igniting creative sparks and imparting knowledge.
JW : 1. My creative process is deeply rooted in personal expression and storytelling. While I'm aware of design trends, my primary focus is on staying true to my unique style and artistic vision. I believe that design trends can be influential but should not dictate the core of one's work. My inspiration comes from diverse sources, ranging from nature to human experiences, rather than fleeting trends. I value the enduring impact of timeless design over fleeting trends, and my goal is to create pieces that resonate with emotions and stand the test of time.
JW : Good design, for me, encapsulates a harmonious blend of form and function. A well-designed product or project often evokes a sense of clarity and elegance – you know it when you see it. Common mistakes to avoid include sacrificing aesthetics for functionality or vice versa, neglecting user experience, and disregarding sustainability. A design is considered good when it not only solves a problem but also conveys a narrative, resonates emotionally, and stands the test of time. It's that 'aha' moment when everything aligns to create something exceptional.
JW : The readiness of a design is a delicate balance. I believe that, in many ways, a design can be a work in progress. There's always room for improvement, and as artists and designers, we tend to revisit our work with fresh perspectives. However, there comes a point when a design reaches a state of equilibrium, where it fulfils its intended purpose, resonates with its audience, and aligns with the initial vision. At that moment, it's ready for its intended context, but the journey of improvement and exploration continues in the creative mind.
JW : It's difficult for me to choose a single favourite design, as each project holds its significance and meaning to me. However, I can certainly share an example of a design that has had a profound impact on me. One of my designs is a large-scale public sculpture “Pride of the City” that I had the opportunity to create for Taichung city park in Taiwan. The inspiration for this sculpture is derived from the ecological park within the urban landscape, highlighting the importance of environmental sustainability and the interconnectedness of ecological diversity. It aims to celebrate the harmonious relationship between the environment and the preservation of nature. The design featured a series of intertwining metal structures, representing the image of four birds flying upward, and it presents multiple images similar to trees, flowers, and birds from different angles to show the cycle of four seasons and the harmonious coexistence of all living things. What made this design particularly special to me was the collaborative process involved. I worked closely with the community members, city officials, and cultural representatives, to gather their insights and perspectives. The fabrication process was another memorable aspect of this project. I worked alongside skilled craftsmen and engineers to bring the design to life. Witnessing the transformation of raw materials into a tangible, three-dimensional sculpture was an incredibly rewarding experience. It was a testament to the power of art and design to create something that not only visually captivates but also has a meaningful impact on its surroundings. Once the sculpture was installed in the park, it became a focal point for the community. This design of mine encapsulates the essence of my artistic approach—creating visually striking works that evoke emotions, inspire dialogue, and bring people together. It serves as a reminder of the transformative power of design and the ability of art to enrich lives and create lasting connections within a community.
JW : One of the designers I deeply admire is the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. His extraordinary work, particularly the Sagrada Família , Krypta Colònia Güell, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and Park Güell in Barcelona, is a testament to his visionary approach to architecture and design. Gaudí's unique blend of art and functionality, as well as his innovative use of organic forms, has left an indelible mark on the world of design and architecture. I have visited Gaudí's architectural wonders on multiple occasions and have been deeply moved. His innovative structural designs and visionary approach to sustainability have not only set him ahead of his time but continue to inspire us to this day. The ongoing construction of the Sagrada Família, guided by Gaudí's principles, involves architects, artists, and engineers who are pioneering new techniques to complete his monumental, unfinished work. It has been a truly magnificent creative journey for everyone involved.
JW : Living in Taipei, my lifestyle and culture have a significant influence on my work. This vibrant city provides a constant source of inspiration with its rich history, bustling street life, and the fusion of traditional and modern elements. Music is an integral part of my creative process, often setting the mood for my work. My cultural background underscores the importance of sustainability and harmonious coexistence, which I reflect in my design projects.
JW : My work culture values both independent creation and collaborative efforts. Small-scale sculptures often involve individual craftsmanship, while large-scale projects require diverse teams. Collaboration is central to my process, and I seek partners who share my passion for creativity, precision, and storytelling. In my profession, challenges range from material limitations to expressing intricate concepts. My responsibilities encompass concept development, design, and overseeing fabrication. Essential traits for artists include imagination, attention to detail, and adaptability, as well as a deep understanding of the human experience and a commitment to translating emotions into tangible creations.
JW : I strive to give back to society through my art and teaching. As a university teacher, I mentor the next generation of artists and designers, empowering them with knowledge and inspiration. I am committed to philanthropy through teaching and design services, engaging in charitable fundraisers. I believe in giving back to the community that nurtured my creativity. I consider and actively participate in pro bono design work that aligns with meaningful causes.
JW : Attending the A’ Design Award brought me valuable recognition and exposure. The three main benefits of participating in design awards are recognition, networking, and feedback, which contribute significantly to one's career and design skills. Design competitions are important for showcasing creativity and innovation. Being Designer of the Day is a true honour, recognising the dedication and passion I pour into my work.
