Interview with Fatima Dahmani

Fatima Dahmani ("FD") interviewed on Sunday, 18 June.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

FD : I have a background in science and a strong passion for technology. During my childhood vacations abroad, I discovered the art of Islamic geometric patterns and became captivated by their intricate and mesmerizing designs. In 2017, I decided to combine my artistic heritage with my knowledge of innovative design and 3D printing technologies. As a self-taught creator, I launched the jewelry brand Moucharabieh and furthered my skills in jewelry making and 3D design at the Haute École de Joaillerie in Paris.

How did you become a designer?

FD : My journey as a designer has been shaped by the influences of architectural marvels, the richness of cultural heritage, and the desire to redefine Oriental jewelry through innovation and contemporary design approaches. These inspirations continue to fuel my creativity and drive me to push the boundaries of my craft.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

FD : When designing, I prioritize three key aspects: innovation, craftsmanship, and storytelling. I believe in creating designs that are not only visually appealing but also push the boundaries of what is possible. By integrating innovative techniques and technologies, I strive to bring unique and captivating jewelry pieces to life. Craftsmanship is another crucial element in my design process. I pay meticulous attention to detail and work closely with skilled artisans to ensure that every piece is crafted to perfection. The combination of traditional techniques and modern technologies allows me to achieve intricate patterns and exquisite finishes. Storytelling is at the heart of my designs. Each piece carries a narrative, inspired by cultural heritage and architectural wonders. I aim to evoke emotions and create a sense of wonder and fascination through my jewelry. By infusing storytelling into my designs, I seek to create a deeper connection between the wearer and the piece.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

FD : As a designer, my background has been shaped by various experiences and skills that extend beyond the realm of design itself. One crucial aspect is my appreciation for cultural heritage and architectural history. Understanding the significance of these elements enables me to infuse depth and meaning into my designs. Additionally, my technical knowledge and proficiency in jewelry software and 3D design tools have been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of design and achieving intricate patterns and structures. my strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills have proven essential in overcoming challenges and ensuring the quality of my designs. Being meticulous and thorough in my approach allows me to deliver exceptional craftsmanship.My design journey has been a continuous quest for growth and learning. I am constantly seeking new techniques and inspirations to broaden my creative horizons. This openness to learning and embracing new challenges has allowed me to evolve as a designer and push the boundaries of my craft.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

FD : Looking ahead, my growth path as a designer involves expanding my reach and exploring new avenues for creativity. I aim to collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations to create meaningful projects that resonate with a broader audience. I have a strong desire to design pieces that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, bridging the gap between heritage and contemporary design. My new design project is a jewelry collection inspired by the natural world and its breathtaking beauty. I incorporate organic forms, textures, and colors into unique pieces that evoke a sense of awe and wonder, and a deep understanding of the intricacies of nature. This project is now available as the new Chlorophyll collection on my website.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

FD : To designers who are at the beginning of their careers, my advice would be to embrace curiosity, passion, and perseverance. Never stop learning and exploring new avenues of design. Be open to feedback and critique, as it is through constructive criticism that we grow and refine our skills. It is crucial to develop a strong foundation in design principles, techniques, and technologies.
