Interview with Chiun Ju interior design

Chiun Ju interior design ("CJID") interviewed on Saturday, 8 March.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

CJID : I have over 15 years of experience in interior design and serve as the design director of Qunzhu Interior Design Co., Ltd., specializing in modern classic and contemporary styles. It has provided design services for high-end residences, commercial spaces and boutique clubs. In addition, I am studying for a master’s degree at the School of Design and Art, Taipei University of Technology, and have won several international design awards, such as the A’ Design Award. Through design, I am committed to exploring the perfect balance between spatial aesthetics and functionality to create a unique and timeless experience for users.

How did you become a designer?

CJID : My love for design stems from my deep feeling for space and aesthetics. I have been interested in architecture and interior layout since I was a child. I chose to become a designer because I believe good design can change the quality of life. I have over 23 years of professional experience. Founding Qunzhu Interior Design Co., Ltd., I am committed to combining modern classic and modern styles to create unique and soulful spaces. My design philosophy is to let every space tell a story and enhance people's life experience.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

CJID : In my design process, I prioritize functionality, aesthetic balance, and spatial emotion. My work emphasizes human-space interaction, utilizing refined materials and lighting design to create immersive experiences. I specialize in modern classical and contemporary styles, integrating digital tools, 3D rendering, and hand sketches to refine details. I also develop physical models and material prototypes to ensure authenticity. When starting a new project, I focus on user needs, blending technology with craftsmanship to create unique and soulful spaces.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

CJID : Design fills me with excitement, challenge, and fulfillment. The most thrilling phase is concept development and storytelling, where ideas transform into tangible designs, igniting my passion. I enjoy exploring possibilities, refining details, and shaping spaces that evoke emotions. The greatest satisfaction comes from seeing the final realization of a project. To me, design is more than work—it’s an emotional expression and a way of life. Through design, I give spaces a soul, creating environments that influence emotions and daily experiences, which brings me the greatest joy.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

CJID : Beyond design skills, observation, communication, and business acumen are crucial for designers. Keen observation enhances my understanding of space and human interaction, effective communication ensures my design vision is clearly conveyed, and business thinking helps me balance budget and aesthetics. I am deeply influenced by architectural masters and the humanities, shaping my unique style through continuous learning and practice. My design journey has been one of exploration and growth, where each project presents a new challenge, driving me to constantly innovate and push boundaries.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

CJID : My growth goal is to enhance brand influence, explore furniture and décor design, and bring CHIUN JU Interior Design to the international stage. In the future, I aspire to design a landmark space that integrates art, culture, and sustainability, creating works that balance aesthetics and functionality. I also plan to develop a budget-tiered design system, helping designers create high-quality projects within clients' financial constraints. I strive to be a designer who bridges innovation with practicality, continuously pushing the boundaries of design and leaving behind remarkable works in my professional career.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

CJID : For aspiring designers, my advice is to stay passionate, embrace challenges, and develop business acumen. Design is not just about creativity; it also requires budget management and balancing client needs. Young designers should participate in competitions, gain hands-on experience, and study market trends. I have faced conflicts between budget and creativity, but through continuous learning and adaptation, I found optimal solutions. The best advice I received is: "Design is not about pleasing yourself; it’s about solving problems." Only through constant learning and practice can one achieve long-term success in the design industry.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

CJID : Successful design is about balancing creativity, execution, and business strategy. Designers should continuously refine their skills, understand market trends, and build a personal brand. Avoid focusing solely on aesthetics while neglecting functionality and user needs. When communicating with clients, clearly convey the value of design, rather than just fulfilling requests. I encourage designers to participate in international competitions, broaden their perspectives, and collaborate across disciplines for fresh insights. Most importantly, design is not just creation; it is the art of problem-solving—maintaining a learning mindset is key to thriving in a competitive industry.

What is your day to day look like?

CJID : My day starts with reading design trends and international architecture news, followed by team meetings to discuss project progress and client requirements. I spend time sketching concepts and refining 3D renderings to ensure aesthetics and functionality align. Afternoons often involve client meetings or site visits to oversee execution details. The most fulfilling moments are when creative inspiration strikes and seeing designs come to life. Even on busy days, enjoying a good cup of coffee and reflecting on new ideas are the little things that keep my passion alive.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

CJID : I stay updated with global design trends but do not blindly follow them. Instead, I integrate them into my personal style, creating timeless designs that embody contemporary spirit. My inspiration comes from architecture, art, fashion, and nature, and I stay ahead by engaging in competitions, exhibitions, and industry forums. I believe that design should go beyond trends and focus on spatial essence and user experience. Therefore, I strive to blend classic and modern elements, ensuring that my work remains both aesthetically and functionally relevant across generations.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

CJID : Good design embodies functionality, aesthetic balance, and emotional resonance. When evaluating a project, I first assess whether it meets user needs and enhances experience, then examine materials and detailing for quality and longevity. A design is successful when it achieves depth in simplicity and maintains timeless value through innovation. Common mistakes include over-decoration, neglecting usability, or lacking a compelling narrative. For me, the essence of design lies in harmonizing beauty with function while creating a lasting emotional impact.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

CJID : For me, design is never truly "finished"; rather, I stop refining when functionality, aesthetics, and details reach their optimal balance. A design is ready when it perfectly meets user needs, showcases impeccable craftsmanship, and conveys a clear design narrative. However, I believe design should continuously evolve, so even after a project is completed, I reflect on ways to enhance spatial experiences. True success is when users emotionally connect with the space, and the design remains timeless and relevant over time.

What is your biggest design work?

CJID : My most proud design project is a luxury residence blending modern classical style, where aesthetic and functionality reach a perfect balance. Inspired by European classical architecture and modern minimalism, I used refined materials and lighting design to create an immersive spatial experience. The biggest challenge was achieving a high-end look within a limited budget, which I overcame through meticulous budget management and innovative design solutions. Currently, I am exploring furniture and décor design, expanding my brand influence to create more impactful works.

Who is your favourite designer?

CJID : I deeply admire Louis Kahn for his mastery of light, space, and materials, creating designs that are both aesthetic and philosophical. If I could speak with one deceased designer, it would be Le Corbusier, whose work reshaped modern architecture by redefining function and form. I also believe Mies van der Rohe had a profound impact on contemporary design with his "less is more" philosophy, influencing minimalism and architectural purity. These masters have greatly shaped my design perspective, inspiring me to balance function, beauty, and meaning in every project.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

CJID : I love exploring urban cultures, and Paris and London are my favorite cities for their seamless blend of history and modern design, constantly inspiring me. Music, especially classical and jazz, is an essential part of my creative process, helping me focus and reflect. I believe design shapes lifestyles, transforming human behavior and emotions through space. Currently, I am working on furniture and décor design, aiming to integrate design into everyday life. Small design details—lighting, materials, and proportions—enhance my own living experience and strongly influence my design philosophy.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

CJID : My work culture emphasizes creativity, professionalism, and collaboration. I believe teamwork and open communication lead to better design solutions. I work closely with skilled partners and artisans, selecting team members based on attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and passion for design. I value innovation, responsibility, and adaptability in colleagues. The biggest challenge in design is balancing budget, functionality, and aesthetics. A great designer must be observant, patient, and committed to continuous learning, ensuring they create impactful and meaningful designs that improve everyday life.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

CJID : I believe design should serve society and improve lives. I actively engage in pro bono design and education initiatives, mentoring young designers and providing growth opportunities. I have participated in community renovation projects and affordable housing improvements, using design to enhance living conditions. I also advocate for sustainable design and circular economy principles to promote responsible resource use. I encourage designers to join humanitarian projects, as good design shapes not only spaces but also society. Through lectures and competitions, I support emerging designers, fostering innovation and creating more opportunities for them.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

CJID : Participating in A’ Design Award has been an invaluable experience, providing me with international recognition, brand exposure, and professional growth. The three key benefits of design competitions are: enhancing global influence, expanding professional networks, and opening market opportunities. These competitions validate my design skills and motivate me to constantly innovate and refine my craft. Winning design awards brings greater career opportunities and increases design value. Being selected as Designer of the Day is a great honor, allowing my design philosophy to reach a wider audience and inspiring me to create even more impactful works in the future.
