Interview with Xiong Zhang

Xiong Zhang ("XZ") interviewed on Wednesday, 15 May.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

XZ : As a designer with over thirty years of experience, I've had the opportunity to work across various industries and collaborate with numerous clients and companies. I've been involved in packaging design for industries such as tea, cosmetics, and food, as well as urban landscape design for cities and enterprises. My educational background includes a degree in Visual Communication Design, and I've also served as a teacher at Southwest University in the Packaging Engineering Department.

How did you become a designer?

XZ : I became a designer because I have always been passionate about art, aesthetics, and problem-solving. I chose this path because I believe in the power of design to make a positive impact on people's lives and society as a whole. My journey started with my education in Visual Communication Design, where I learned the fundamentals of design principles and techniques. Over the years, my drive to create meaningful and impactful designs has been fueled by my internal desire to contribute to the world through good design.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

XZ : When designing, my priorities revolve around user-centered design, sustainability, and innovation. I believe in putting the user at the center of the design process, ensuring that their needs and experiences are considered at every stage. Sustainability is also a key aspect of my design philosophy, as I strive to use eco-friendly materials and practices whenever possible. In terms of technique and style, I rely on a combination of digital tools and traditional methods, depending on the project requirements. I approach each new project with a blend of creativity, research, and collaboration to develop innovative solutions.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

XZ : When designing, I often experience a range of emotions, including excitement, satisfaction, and sometimes even frustration. The most exciting phase for me is the initial idea generation and concept development, where the possibilities are endless and creativity flows freely. However, seeing the final product come to life and knowing that it will positively impact users brings me a deep sense of fulfillment and happiness. Designing allows me to express my creativity, solve problems, and make a meaningful difference in the world.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

XZ : Several aspects of my background have shaped me as a designer, including my strong communication skills, attention to detail, and passion for lifelong learning. These non-design skills have been instrumental in my success as they enable me to effectively collaborate with clients, understand their needs, and communicate my ideas clearly. Additionally, my experiences in teaching and academia have enhanced my ability to research, analyze, and innovate in the field of design. My design journey has been influenced by a combination of mentors, colleagues, and personal experiences, all of which have contributed to my growth and development as a designer.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

XZ : My growth path as a designer involves continuously expanding my expertise, pursuing new opportunities, and pushing the boundaries of creativity. In the future, I aspire to work on larger-scale projects that have a significant impact on communities and the environment. My dream design project would involve creating sustainable urban spaces that enhance people's quality of life while preserving natural resources. I want to be remembered as a designer who made a positive difference in the world through thoughtful, innovative, and sustainable design solutions.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

XZ : My advice to young designers is to stay curious, embrace challenges, and never stop learning. It's important to develop a strong foundation in design principles and techniques, but also to constantly seek inspiration from diverse sources and be open to new ideas. Don't be afraid to take risks and make mistakes, as they are valuable learning opportunities. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and role models who can offer guidance, support, and feedback along the way. Remember that success in design comes from a combination of passion, perseverance, and continuous improvement.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

XZ : To fellow designers, artists, and architects, I suggest staying true to your vision, embracing authenticity, and prioritizing quality over quantity. Focus on creating work that is meaningful, impactful, and reflective of your unique voice and perspective. Don't be afraid to challenge conventions, experiment with new techniques, and push the boundaries of creativity. Stay humble, stay hungry, and never stop striving for excellence in everything you do.

What is your day to day look like?

XZ : My day-to-day routine as a designer typically involves a mix of creative work, client meetings, research, and collaboration with colleagues. I usually start my day by reviewing my schedule, checking emails, and prioritizing tasks for the day. Throughout the day, I work on various design projects, attend meetings with clients and team members, and allocate time for research and development. Despite the challenges and demands of the job, I find joy and satisfaction in the process of creating and problem-solving.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

XZ : I keep up with the latest design trends by staying informed through design publications, websites, social media, and industry events. While I value staying current with trends, I also believe in maintaining a balance between following trends and staying true to my own design style and principles. I draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including nature, art, architecture, and everyday experiences. Ultimately, I believe that good design transcends trends and should be timeless, relevant, and meaningful to users.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

XZ : I believe a product or project is well-designed when it effectively meets the needs and expectations of its users while also considering factors such as functionality, aesthetics, sustainability, and innovation. Good design is defined by its ability to solve problems, enhance experiences, and evoke emotions in a meaningful and thoughtful way. When evaluating products or projects, I look for a cohesive integration of form and function, attention to detail, and a clear understanding of the user's journey and needs. One particular aspect that I consider essential in good design is simplicity – the ability to communicate complex ideas or functions in a clear and intuitive manner. Common mistakes to avoid in making good design include prioritizing style over substance, neglecting user feedback, and overlooking the importance of usability and accessibility. For me, a design is good when it not only looks visually appealing but also enhances the user's life in a meaningful way, whether it's through improved functionality, efficiency, or emotional connection.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

XZ : Deciding if a design is ready involves a combination of factors, including meeting project requirements, achieving design goals, and obtaining feedback from stakeholders. While a design can reach a point where it satisfies the project brief and fulfills its intended purpose, there may still be opportunities for refinement and improvement. As a designer, I strive for continuous improvement and innovation, but there comes a time when I must make the decision to finalize a design and move forward. This decision is often guided by deadlines, budget constraints, and the overall project timeline. Success for a product or project is measured by its ability to meet or exceed expectations, achieve its intended objectives, and positively impact users or stakeholders.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

XZ : My lifestyle and culture play a significant role in shaping my design philosophy and approach. I draw inspiration from the diverse cultures and landscapes that surround me, incorporating elements of nature, history, and tradition into my designs. I have a deep appreciation for music, which often serves as a source of creative inspiration and emotional expression. I believe that good design is necessary for the advancement of society as it has the power to improve people's lives, foster cultural exchange, and promote sustainability. In my own life, design has influenced my daily habits and choices, encouraging me to prioritize simplicity, functionality, and environmental consciousness.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

XZ : In my work culture and business philosophy, I value collaboration, integrity, and innovation. I believe in creating a supportive and inclusive work environment where creativity thrives and individuals are empowered to reach their full potential. I often collaborate with partners and colleagues who share similar values and vision, fostering a culture of teamwork and mutual respect. When selecting business partners or hiring employees, I look for individuals who are passionate, dedicated, and possess a strong work ethic. Core challenges of my profession include staying current with industry trends, managing client expectations, and balancing creative vision with practical constraints. As a designer, artist, or architect, important characteristics and personal traits include creativity, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a passion for lifelong learning.

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

XZ : As a designer, artist, and architect, I believe in giving back to the community and using my skills and talents to make a positive impact on society. This may involve volunteering for pro bono design projects, mentoring aspiring designers, or supporting local arts and cultural initiatives. I believe that artists, designers, and architects have a unique ability to address social and environmental challenges through creative solutions and collaboration. By involving themselves in humanitarian projects, they can contribute to positive change and promote social justice and equality. Good design is not just about aesthetics; it's about creating meaningful experiences and improving people's lives.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?

XZ : Participating in design awards such as the A' Design Award has been a rewarding experience for me on several levels. Firstly, it provides validation and recognition for my work, which boosts confidence and motivation. Secondly, it offers valuable exposure and visibility within the design community and industry, leading to new opportunities and collaborations. Thirdly, it encourages continuous improvement and excellence in design by setting high standards and promoting innovation. Overall, design awards and competitions contribute to my career by enhancing credibility, expanding networks, and fostering growth and development as a designer. Being named Designer of the Day is a great honor and privilege, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my insights and experiences with others in the design community.
